Computer build, some parts are temp, need suggestions

Thread Starter
Case: Thermaltake Soprano - $101.15
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - $165.65
Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 W0093 500W ATX12V V2.0 24/20 Pin - $89.53
RAM: OCZ EL Gold GX XTC PC4000 2GB 2X1GB - $253.99

Sub-total - $610.32
S&H + Insurance: $55.09
GST(7%): $46.58
Total: $711.99

I really need to tone this down quite a bit, I think the main problem is I couldn't find any good RAM, any suggestions on this?

All prices are in Canadian dollars.

EDIT: I just did a very similar build at a different computer store and here is how it turned out.

Case: Thermaltake Soprano - $109.00
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - $169.99
Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 W0093 500W ATX12V V2.0 24/20 Pin - $88.99
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tracer Memory 512 MB DDR500 - $89.00

Sub-total: $456.99
S&H: $10
GST+PST: $70.05
Total: $537.04

I was planning on keeping the case, RAM and PSU, replacing the CPU and mobo and video card when the time comes.

I already have the mobo and the video card too, that's why they aren't up there.

If I read the title right, this will be a temporary rig till you build another? If so, i would go cheaper on the case. The ram has a mail-in rebate...so there's 40 more off.

If you want to drop down to 2x512Mb check out..these..CAD$142.00
As for the PSU THERMALTAKE units are not very strong and stable, you might have to try for somwthing a little better.

cheers

From the second site you list :

PSU..ENERMAX 495W NOISETAKER..here..CAD$90.00
RAM..CORSAIR TWINX1024 3200C2..here..CAD$144.00 and will give you 2-3-3-6 at 200MHz I have stretxched it to 208MHz but a little flaky at those timmings
or
2x512Mb of the CRUCIAL you listed..CAD$180.00
CASE..LIAN-LI PC-0703A..here..CAD$70.00

I 100% agree with xie67, that ram is okay (I own some) and I have 2-3-3-5 @ 220MHz, which isn't THAT bad but it works pretty well for ram as cheap as it is. And thats a pretty damn good price for a Lian-Li case, they finally started making value cases. As for the PSU, its a pretty good powesupply, enermax's noisetaker psu's are pretty good, but I HIGHLY advise from any thermaltake psu's. They are ALRIGHT but they're best for just websurfing/general use computers. Not overclocking.

Well, I was planning on keeping the case, RAM and PSU, replacing the CPU and mobo and video card when the time comes.

I already have the mobo and the video card too, that's why they aren't up there.

I meant to specify that, but I forgot.

With the suggestions from xie67, I saw that Lian-Li case, but I was debating because I thought it was brutal because of the low price. I'll get that enermax instead of the TT, thanks for the suggestion, never knew TT made poor PSU. I also like the Crucial RAM, so I'll get another 512mb stick when I get some extra money.

No I mean what motherboard and CPU do you have at the moment for the components. Is it the one in your system specs ?

Don't have a CPU, mobo is Gigabyte GA-K8U-939

But I'm planning on moving all the parts to the DFI when I get it, thus the reason I'm getting decent RAM and PSU now.

I now am confused..

I thought you were trying to get a temporary system up and running ?.

Okay what I now understand is (just looked at your edits) :
You required RAM-CPU-PSU-CASE to place with your already purchased motherboard and GPU.
This then would be upgraded at a later date with new motherboard and GPU.

cheers
