Building A Mac From Scratch. ! - Page 2

OK lol It's time to look at the facts. $2500 for a quad core and 3 GB of RAM with no monitor. Macs are wayyyy overpriced, so don't even try to say they aren't
That Mac Pro has been $2500 for about a year and a half, back when it was released it's pricing was comparable with other workstations. Apple will update the Mac Pro's soon, sometime in the next three months I believe, which is a good time to compare it to other machines.

Also, you should never really buy the RAM or HD's from Apple, they charge a lot, so if you buy them from somewhere like OWC, then they are even cheaper.

The 27" iMac is great value, and the iMac line is due for a refresh a few weeks after the Mac Pro. The MacBook/MacBook Pro's are a little more expensive than most comparable laptops, but it's nothing major.

Apple's next Mac Pro (Due to be released soon) is going to have dual 3 GHz Intel Octa-core chips, as well as shipping with a 5750 and 8 GB of RAM.

I can expect that to be released for a retail of $3000.

Also, I don't think that many people realize this, but Mac Pros have many server grade parts that cost more (but are more reliable) than regular desktop PC parts. For example, Mac Pros use error correcting memory, this leads to a greater level of stability (memory is actually corrupted quite frequently with non-ecc ram).

As well, the cooling is really superb. I own a 2008 Mac Pro, that has dual quads @ 2.8 GHz in it. This was in 2008. Yet, even at 100% capacity, (compiling) I can only barely hear the sound of the fans. And this is in a dead quiet home office.

So while the average PC user may not need these features they are nice to have, especially if you do a lot of high performance work on your computer.

But I do agree in their current state they are over priced.

Hackintosh stuff is not allowed on ocn. But there is sooo much stuff on the web about it. Just get any intel cpu...but MAKE SURE TO GET THE RIGHT MOBO: you'll need to read up on boot-132 discs which will allow you to install osx on your pc mobo.

checkout these sites: os86 wiki and insanelymac.com

Just google Os86 or hackinstosh and (insert your desired mobo here)

It may be quiet but what are your temps? I have heard of those Mac Pros running well over 80c

You can't build a Mac the "right way", no matter what you're doing you'll be running a hackintosh.
Non mac components vary in pricing. Many try to do rip offs but many do not.

Mac has a lot of hidden fees and only lately since the laptop war with non macs have that changed. Their warranty is still as expensive if not up to twice as expensive as DELL's warranty and half as good.

Ram goes through about one failure a month given average quality of ram when it is not overclocked or underclocked and is matched properly with compatible motherboard. Adding ECC just slows your cycles.

True flaw of any MAC is actually design. Most of their laptops suffer from heat issues on their midgrade > high-grade models.

It isn't a mac if it can't fit in a yellow envelope. If it can't fit in an envelope, then you didn't sacrifice enough useful things and you will inevitably be disappointed. Macs are only good for one thing: induction to a clique.

Trendy macs. Macs are trendy. Macs are cool. Macs are better. You want a mac. Totally recyclable except for all the silicon and hazardous alloys. Macs are trendy. You want a mac. Flashing colors. Poppy advertising. You love the poppy advertising.

My 2008 Mac Pro never went past 40c with a GTX 285 inside of it, although I was never able to tell the temperature of the GPU from OSX. Some things were as low as ~25 as well.

Pretty much all laptops suffer from heat issues with those kind of components, not much can be done about it.

Mac components are the same as PC components, there isn't really a difference. Hidden fee's? Like what?

Their warranty is fantastic, IIRC they have the highest customer satisfaction to do with their warranty, on an iMac it's only like $250 US to get a 3 year warranty. It also doesn't just cover the parts, you can call up and get help with OSX or the Mac.

You might want to take a look at this thread over at Insanely Mac detailing one posters quest to build a Mac Pro from legit Apple parts. Note to mods, thie link below is not a EULA violating Hackintosh but a Mac Pro despite being on the IM forum.
