the Opteron 165, 170, 175 and 180's are 939, not 940.....

X2 4400, or X2 4800 are your best bet right now.......I wouldn't go for the FX60, considering its $400 more than the 4800....and only 200mhz higher per core....which is 1 dollar per mhz

Don't bother with the 4200, or 4600.....the less cache will hurt you in the long run......kinda like my 3500+

THATS WHAT I MEANT. I meant that he was talking about the S940s when he was mentioning about the buffered ram. I KNOW those are S939 (well the 1XXs are all S939...so they are S939).

Well, I was prolly unclear

I'd go with an opteron 170 it has 2x1MB L2 cache and overclocks easily. Also does not require alot of volts so you can run your 170 @2.6GHz on stock volts with Stock Heatsink. Also they say that an Opteron is made of a better parts since it's built for a server/workstation use but I don't know that for sure.

omg, what has happened to this forum.....(insert mr.opterown)
I know it's been a while since i've been here but people are losing their minds.
This decision depends on your budget.
the X2's are a waste of money IMO. Save the cash, get the 170 (my fav. dual core btw) and overclock the snot out of it.
If money isn't an object and you have nothing better to do with the cash, then go for the X2.
The concept of overclocking is spending the least amount of money for the best performance capabilities.....at least that's how i view it.
