I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Hey all,

I've been able to successfully overclock the old AMD 3200+ (32) in the past with rather satisfying results. On my newer rig however, I'm having a bit a trouble and I really don't understand why. First and foremost, here's the rig:

Antec 500 watt PSU
AMD 64 3200+ Venice core with Thermaltake XP-90C Heatsink
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI
1 Gig (2x512) OCZ Platinum Rev 2 3200 (2.2.2.5)
(Irrelevant but just in case)
Leadtek 7800 GTX
Maxtor 250 Gig HD 16 MB Cache

I've read many how to guides on OCing the AMD 64 chipsets. From what I've experimented with, I've had absolutely no stable successful results. My temps are good (28 degrees idle), but I'm still getting hangs off the get go when windows boots. I think a lot of this might have to do with voltage settings. My BIOS comes with a built in Mem test and I ran it and passed a few rounds with the settings of 270 FSB, 3x LDT/FSB, 10x CPU FSB, 3-3-3-6 timing, 2.75 VDimm, and Ram memory at 166 MHZ (I pulled most of these settings off what I've been reading some of you had), but the booting still crashed on windows loading up. This was just my testing grounds but with that failing I've stepped lower and lower (at least on the FSB end) with no luck.

I really don't want to ask for someone else to do the work for me but if anyone else is holding a similar rig it'd be great to hear their experiences/results from it. I'd love to get this thing on par and properly clocked for TES:Oblivion when it comes out next week, so any help with this is greatly appreciated.

This might be a total lack of information provided and I appoligize in advance for lacking it but I'm not the most experienced with the whole overclocking brainwork. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom given!

By the sounds of things you've not increased your vcore yet. Try raising this (start at 1.4v and move up gradually) until your cpu is stable. Keep an eye on your temps though at load.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Before I take another stab at this, do you have any idea if I should even be adjusting my memory timings just yet?

Keep them at 3-3-3-8 and then tighten them up as much as possible as the last step. The ram is running at ~225Mhz at the moment. Might be worth using a lower divider to keep them under 200Mhz, whilst testing your CPU and then bring the speed up as much as possible later.

Ok I've tried all the settings of other people with similar boards but am still getting no luck on booting windows. I'm thinking that I'm screwing up the settings somewhere, but don't know how.

Should I be able to up the FSB to say 220 without having to adjust anything else? Just to double check, my BIOS has FDT/FSB which should be set to 4x and the CPU/FSB should be set to 10x correct? I was hoping I could do this without having any problems and leaving the FSB at 200 but that still causes Windows to fail to boot. The computer will just restart itself when it's trying to load up windows.

I'm really hoping I'm not being capped in some reason based on hardware, and thanks for the replies thusfar Ste.

So this is crashing on the bootup at 200Mhz? What's your vcore set to (Vid)? If it's at auto, try setting to 1.4v and then retry.

set optimized defaults...then turn off c+q, throttling, errata and all that stuff....then change vcore to 1.4v and set your ram at 1:1. Move the fsb to 220 and set the htt multi to 4. Try that fir starters. See what happens.

Hmmm your settings look like they should be. Im assuming that setting the vcore is at startup settings, maybe that should be the best thing to adjust. I really dont know why it wont let you boot up with the HT x4 and the FSB as stock. Up the voltage a bit and see what it does. Hopefully someone else here has a few pointers because everything looks golden and your hardware is nice so it shouldn't be holding you back

edit: ya i second what sideburns said

You guys are great here! Thanks again for all the quick replies, I'm going to take a stab at what you guys have said yet once again. I'm determined to get this thing to at least 2.6, I just have to find the things I'm doing wrong.

I've never tried turning off any of the things you've mentioned Sideburns, so hopefully I'll get some luck off trying those steps.

I'm pretty sure any testing I've done and will do will screw my computer up, I'm just looking to get a stable boot with some overclocking.

Back to work on this I go and thanks again!

Awesome. I gave that a go (Throttling was on at 50% and I disabled that), and it actually booted for once at 2.2gighz.

I'm a bit scared on the next step I should take though. For starts my CPU/FSB is still on auto, should I set that to 10X? After that I'd assume I'd shoot for the highest FSB setting it will boot with without crashing, then down my Ram from 1:1 to 166 mhz? I just don't know how ram timings/voltage works, so I'd like to avoid that until needed. Thanks guys!
