RAID 0 would make them one drive with no real performance increase or any sort of protection for your file system.

Why not RAID 1? My understanding of SSD is limited though so it may not give you the performance boost i think it will but it'll keep your files safer.

Not worth it because the two of you cant (2 previous posters)? sure raid0 isnt as safe as raid 1-10, but the OP is asking will he/she see performance gains.. the simple answer is yes!!!

I mean we all use SSD's as OS / Application drives not as storage, and if one drive goes down big deal you can reload everything in about 30 minutes OS and all drivers etc..

I thought this was a overclocker site you know the people who take risks to gain just a little more performance out of their rigs. I for one have my 3 SSd's in Raid 0, its fast and have other drives to back up my whole system, heck even my 1.2TB storage drives are in Raid0 for fast access.. live fast die young!!!!! OP buy the second drive and Raid 0 the heck out of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS if you want to put a 50GB and a 60GB into raid0 i would suggest same GB's and Same manufacturer, so i'd advise against a 50gb + 60gb raid 0, My 2 Cents

let me rephrase that:

It is faster, but is it worth it in my opinion: no.

I've used RAID in the past, and I've not been impressed, versus putting different apps on different drives... I suppose if you only had one app you could make it a bit faster.

If you're working with large files regularly like Video Editing, it might be worth it.

this is important, since if they are different sizes, the raid controller will ignore, in this case, 10GB off the 60GB drive, so you will have a total of 100GB in the raid, not 110, since the raid can only use whatever the smallest space on a drive is.

Really?? I thought RAID-0 (which is what everyone uses for faster performance) just striped data, and kept on striping... I guess it makes sense that it cannot use odd sized drives but I was under the impression the RAID controllers were smarter then that --- I guess not

what RAID 0 does is stripes data back and fourth on each drive. YES there is a performance increase, ive used it for gaming, and compared to all my other systems, my one with the RAID 0 array is always in the server first. it just doubles the speed of the drives. using them as one drive. and im not sure, but i think that if you combine a 50gb and 60gb it would be made into one 50gb? idk thats how it is on my old ide drives. i havent used an ssd yet
post #9 of 19
No.

Two 50GB in RAID 0 = 100GB
Two 50GB in RAID 1 = 50GB

So you'd see a performance gain yes. You'd need two disks that have the same speeds and size.

Also the original question was "Is this worth it?" and at $170 (50GB one are still $150), not for me. If one disk goes bad you lose all data in RAID 0 even while one disk still works fine.

and thats the beauty of backups, which everyone should use. Plus SSD's are supposed to be more reliable.
correct about a 50/60gb RAID 0 It will only be 100gb
