Artifacts: How many are to many?

Thread Starter
well i downloaded 3dmark05, ran it without OC'ing anything and it ran perfectly. Then i clicked "Detect Optimal Frequencies" and ran mark05 again, this time getting artifacts, about 1 sq centimeter each, about 50 total, all at random places on the screen. so i was like bleh, time to go back to my regular settings.
but today i downlaoded aquamark, ran it with regular settings and scored a 36,400. i ran it 2 more times for consistency, and scored -200 each time (probably due to heating problems?) so i let it cool down, clicked "detect opimtal frequencies" once more, and it set the clock rates back to where they were the first time i did this. So i ran aquamark again, and i had NO artifacts?!?! what gives? plus, i scored a 37,979, ran it twice more and only dropped about -120 each one. why is this? is mark05 more demanding on graphics? is this a good thing or a bad thing, should i leave it at its settings or go back to defaults?

PS: I play BF2 actively, and have yet to try it with these new settings.

Detect optimal will give you different results depending on how hot your card is when you use it. its not good to have any artifacts.. What is it setting it at?

Yeah 3dMark05 is going be more hardcore on your system probably for the simple fact that it is newer and will touture you system more. I tried using the detect optimal frequencies but that set them a little to high. I clicked each one down a step and it worked perfectly. I know that when I try 3dMark06 on my comp compared to 05 it will show the artifacts that I wouldn't get on 05. Hope this helps.

1 artifact is too many...

Detect optimal frequency sucks.

Use coolbits 2.0 manually..and use ATI-tool to detect artifacts...

Yes it does. I think the most recent BETA supports overclocking with nvidia cards also.

about 2 minutes of running the "find max core" on ATi Tool put my card at 92 degrees! i dont think its ever been that high!! how can such a little fuzzy box make my card so hot?
how hot does it get during 5 hours of playing BF2 on medium settings? i cant check because my alt+tab sequence is pretty slow

also, it works for clocking my card, but when i save the settings and go to my nVidia display and click clockrate settings, the numbers are different than those of the ones i got from the ATi tool. do i have to manually set the clock rates in the clockrate settings of the nVidia display for them to apply to ur card or will the ATi tool modify it also? (i know i really didnt make sense, if u need futher description ill take some screenshots)

I've had no luck using AtiTool to o/c my card. Main problem is that it actually underclocks the memory freq below stock, when I know through testing in-game that I can get to 590 on it without artifacting. I just use RivaTuner to o/c and AtiTool to scan for artifacts.
