WRT610N Problems

Thread Starter
I'm having problems with my WRT610N.
The wireless just keeps dropping in and out for no reason suddenly. It'll just stop working! Whether I use it with B/G or B/G/N - it keeps doing it.

I just tried to use DD-WRT on it, and the problem still exists if not worse than before. In fact, when I do get connection - the speeds are 10x worse. Enough to make my new Xbox 360 to start spazzing out and lock up because it just doesn't seem to be happy with the firmware.

It's pissing me off now, because I already have enough problems with my NAT due to Time Warner Cable giving me a modem/router that I HAVE to use to get 50Mbps.

With my iPhone for example, it'll show that the SSID is broadcasting. But it won't let me connect. It'll just refuse me no matter what WPA2 password I use.

Did this just start happening?Check for heat issue's,if it is running warm try moving it or providing some type of cooling.Did you reboot everything after flashing? Also try changing the channel of the router.

I doubt it's a heat issue unless the thing is packed/surrounded by a bunch of crap.

Also, has this always happened? Or is it a new occurrence?

I returned my WRT610n for the newer, although lower spec, WRT320N. I had exactly the same problem and my router turned out to be faulty. I tried WRT firmare on it prior to returning it just to test the signal strength. Sure enough there was 50%+ signal loss with my wireless adapter less than 1ft away with only me connected.

I don't know what antenna's are used with the WRt610N but they certainly aren't very good quality, and being internal antenna's makes it even worse.

What happens if you try using...
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/21/09) mega
(SVN revision 12533)

A lot of the broadcom based routers have issues with the new(er)(est) firmware. Assuming it is broadcom, cause I can't find the danged chipset of the router right now for whatever reason... :\\ Yeah, it is: WRT610N (Rev 2) ChipsetBCM4718

I'll try that tomorrow.

Right now, after vigorously playing with tons of settings - it seems VERY sensitive to the TX power settings. Too high or too low makes it either very unstable or very slow. I found great success so far with 65 or 64. 70 makes it crash every hour or so and 60 or lower degrades the speed and the length of the Wifi.

I've been pretty much streaming Netflix all day on my 360. So far so good, tomorrow I'll see if it will crash at all.

New occurrence. I've ALWAYS had problems with my router, especially my NAT which I can never seem to resolve for my 360 and PS3, but I would like to think it's the fact that I'm "doubling up" on routers. The stupid piece of garbage that Time Warner doesn't let you configure, have to use, and pay additional monthly for really seems to be where most problems stem from.

The router is actually very warm. It doesn't seem to matter where or how it stands. But it's always pretty much been like this. It used to be even sit ontop of a desktop where the ventilation would come out, so it used to be even hotter so I'm skeptical it's the temperature.

yeah, why Linksys suddenly went internal is beyond me. It certainly has (or had) good signal throughout my house but it could be much better.
I'm extremely tempted to build my own router once I get the money.
