[Official] nVidia Surround - Page 113

hey guys,

really2 interested in surround gaming, but tbh i don't really have that much money to spend. i do like multi monitor setup, and past experience with two lcd's , 19" and 15", quite improve my productivity.
currently i play games with my sig rig + led tv 32", it's quite nice and all but i really want to try surround gaming. after i read some posts here, i realized that 3 x 1920*1080 need serious muscle to run. so i think i might get cheap 3 lower resolution led monitor and get another gtx580? what you guys think?

btw, i need to upgrade my psu to if i want to get another gtx580 redface.gif
post #1122 of 8961
Anyone have issues with putting three monitors into 2d Surround with using EDID masks/override? It seems my monitors will only go into Surround if the 580's actually electrically poll the monitors EDID through the cable. Modified .inf's don't seem to work around this.

If you want to try it out, three lower res screens will probably be the answer. wink.gif Aim at 1680x1050 if you can, any lower and general-usage suffers (IMO)... wink.gif

With CRTs via VGA? Hm, if I get time tomorrow, I'll VGA-up my Surround rig (mixed 2405s/U2410) and see what happens. Should have time; it's next week my time gets very scarce again. frown.gif

gtx580 sli is a good amount of muscle in my opinion. I'm running screen res 3900x1920 with sli gtx460s and my gaming experience has been pretty good. Only game that I play that ive struggled with has been bf3 and even that on all low gets about 55 fps. I know ALL LOW...HOW TERRIBLE, but that game looks amazing even on low, I was extremely surprised how good it still looking coming from all ultra with 1 monitor. My point being, I personally wouldn't get 1680x1050 screens with those gpus, I think they will run 90%+ games just fine even with higher settings.
I run BF3 @ 5760x1080 on all Ultra with just two 580s. The key here is whether they are 3gb or not. The ram is what will hold you back if you don't have 3gb models.

Sorry about late reply - been away from internet connection.

I tried various different things to force the EDID, and with all of them I couldn't get Surround working. But as I'm running mixed monitors, I'm not sure whether it's because of that or not. Out of curiosity, I also tried mixed DVI/VGA connections; no dice there either.

I half thought the Microsoft regedit method was going to work, as I actually had the option to enable Surround... but it refused, just dumping me back at triple screen extended? Maybe I did something wrong... to be honest, I'm more than a little confused with its behaviour. frown.gif Various papers on DVI/EDID aren't terribly enlightening, either.

I recommend newegg open box or craigslist. I picked my monitors up for $110 a piece.

Also, even at 1.5 vrm id still avoid 1680 res. I've seen youtube videos of people running gtx580s 1.5gb in surround at 1920x1080. All high settings in bf3 and are still getting >50 fps avg. No AA but those are still great frames imo.

I have 2 gtx480s on the way. Probably get them in the next two days. They have 1.5gb vrm as well, I'll report back with some results once I get them installed. Should be a nice improvement from the gtx460s 1gbs cards I have now.

I run 5760x1080 quite effectively with TRI-SLI-1.5GBs. It basically has minor hiccups during setup, and no hiccups in FPS during stress/game testing.

It will even eat Crysis just fine.

I have found that every game running triple screen will require a minor amount of problem solving before you can "fully" enjoy the experience. It is not much and does not take long, especially with communities like Overclock and widescreengamingforum.
