[Official] nVidia Surround - Page 126

I wouldn't touch the 470SLI route - they just don't have enough VRAM. The 680 route or the 3GB 580 route seem like the best options.

I'd watch the 4GB GTX680s to see what happens to the prices of them over the next few weeks as more become available.

Either that or (possibly) try a 7970. I know, I know, heresy coming from someone running nVidia, but... if it works, does it matter? I've had issues with both so I'm unbiased and sort of equally negative about both solutions. wink.gif That said, the 680 has cured many of my woes with nVidia Surround. Just a pity it took 'em so long to get their act together. biggrin.gif

If you have the money, obviously, then 680 SLI over the 580s would be the best way to go. And if you have the patience, I'd wait for the 4GB models. I've heard people say that programs like Precision and Afterburner show VRAM 'allocation' and not actual accurate usage, so I'm not positive on it, but I know in BF3 Precision is showing 1500MBs being used. So, add 2 more monitors and yeah.

currently running a single Gigabyte GTX470 SuperOC model w/ a slightly o/c'd i7 920 and various other bits and pieces... so far i'm thinking i have 3 options...
1. find another 470 superoc (i have found one actually and for a reasonable price!)
2. replace the 470 with a 680 (ideally 2 i guess but would rather not with pricing as it is right now)
3. replace the 470 with 2 x 3gb 580's (it seems the more vram the better for surround? especially if i'm going to try and push 7680x1440 resolution)
thoughts? comments? suggestions?
thanks!

I'm running 470's in SLI with a surround setup, and I can tell you that while BF3 and other games are playable, you'd be better off with at least the 1 680 (like others mentioned, wait a bit for the 4gb ver to become more available)
I'm highly tempted to sell off my 470's and see about getting my hands on a 4gb 680, not just for the added performance, the lower power use and lower temps..

It might have changed (Afterburner just queries the driver about VRAM usage, that was why for a long time AMD cards wouldn't tell you how much VRAM was used - AMD didn't make it queriable in the driver) but Afterburner always used to report actual VRAM usage.

My 680 is set on a linear fan profile from 40% at 40*C to 100% at 80*C, and I never see it break 65*C. OK, so when it gets over 62*C the fan seems to really kick up and get a lot louder, but it usually loads at 61*C anyway. But with a TDP of 195w (what's the 470s, something like 225w?) you'll be blown out of the water by how improved an experience it is. nVidia really, really got GK104 right. This is the best GPU I've had since I retired my X1950XTX, and that's saying something, because I loved that card.

Can I use different monitor types for surround gaming?

I've got 2x Dell 2001FP's and I want to get a third one to use for surround gaming, would I be okay with a Dell 2007fp?

They have to be the same resolution, refresh rate and sync polarity. The 2001's were 1600x1200 if I remember rightly, while the 2007 is 1680x1050, so no, that won't work.

Stock isn't bad. I'm quite impressed with it. Water if you can; whatever cooler is on the card if you can't.

The 2007FP is 1600x1200 while the 2007WFP is 1680x1050, although I'm having a hard time finding out about this 'sync polarity' of the monitors.

-edit-
According to this and this the sync polarity is the same. smile.gif
