I run 2 GTX275 896MB and they handle most everything I throw at them. Games like MWLL (Crysis mod), RO2, ArmA2, BC2, BF3 and Skyrim for example, I need to keep it on a normal/medium texture settings, but other than that I run things up to High and VeryHigh settings and its smooth >45fps. I had tried 2 560 ti 2GB, and the performance increase was not worth nearly $600 (>$550 after tax) to me. About the only difference was I could max out the textures, although I was maxing out the 2GB in MWLL and ArmA2 and I was getting 100fps vs 60 in most games I play. And in heavily CPU bottle-necked games like MWLL and ArmA2 I was still down around 40fps at times, in the same place so I guess my >4ghz i7 isn't enough anymore.

I'm running three 1920x1080 screens in portrait mode, so my resolution is 3240x1920.

There are two gtx 560 Ti models: Ti and Ti 448. The GTX 560Ti has only 384 shaders, comes with 1gb or 2gb and can only be sli'd with two cards. Its based on the GF114 core.

The GTX 560 Ti 448 is based on the GF110 core, which is the same as the GTX 570 and 580. Basically, its a slightly crippled GTX 570. They come only with 1.2gb and you can triple sli them (max).

The 448s come with two sli fingers where as the non 448 (GF114) has only one sli finger:

Trust me, I've had three gtx 580 3gb and these were spot on for Surround. These 448s I have can do the job with the lowest settings possible @ 3240x1920. Once you start increasing the settings, frames drop dramatically and their vram becomes a hindering factor.

I've decided to just upgrade to a more powerful range of cards thumb.gif

Definitely the memory on those cards holding you back. I tried surround with two Gigabyte 570 Super Overclocks, they were very powerful, but just didn't have the memory needed to pump out those high resolutions. I ended up selling them for a pair of 570 HD 2.5GB editions, and even though those EVGA 570's were clocked lower than the SOC's, they performed much better at surround with the extra memory. Three 560 Ti's, whether they are 448 core edition or not, is a lot of power, just being held back by the amount of memory on there, bummer.

@frag85, just from personal experience, I felt like I was held back by the 1280MB of memory on my 570's, I can only imagine how much only 896MB holds you back. You say those 275's handle almost everything you throw at them, and that's cool if they do, more power to you for having some beast old school cards....but it just makes me curious. Are you running surround at all? I would think even at 1920x1080 that memory would run out quick in a game like BF3 or Metro 2033.

Metro 2033 is just about playable for me at 1080p with 470SLI, but it does have its moments where it butts into the VRAM limit and framerate crashes as a result. I can't remember exactly what settings I was using (don't think it was all maxed) but they were very, very close to 1.25GB, I'm sure.

Although after being told by hardware reviewers on some site forums that "normal VRAM cards are fine for Surround" it's nice to hear that many other Surround users experience exactly the same issues as myself with VRAM limits. I suspect it'll take a few more years before reviewers as a whole grasp the idea that it's not necessarily lack of raw GPU power that causes games to run poorly when you're running high-res triplewide or 2560x1600 @ 8xAA.

After all, I was doing OK on 2GB 460s for quite some time, in scenarios where the 1GB cards choked and gave single-digit fps...

I bumped my cores to 850 and its definitely improved. I can do Cysis 2 with Extreme and DX11 and maintain ~50-60fps. Turn off DX11 and I can stay in the 70s. Metro is still a challenge. I can't do DX11 or everything, including the menus, bog down severely frown.gif. I'm able to hit High and maintain 60-70fps. Under DX10, the gpu(s) are only using 1gb but I'm sure it hits the vram wall in DX11. I can't push the cards higher since the 3rd doesn't play nice above 850mhz frown.gif

Sigh, still on the fence. I'm thinking two 590s since they are the same price as a new 670. I'll have four cores to push Surround. I thought about 670s but I would want to go triple with those and that will bust the budget. I keep reading reviews and 590s are slightly better than a 670. I know it consumes more power and makes more noise, but I can live with it after watching a few sli 590 vids. I picked up a preowned mb cheap which is ideal for two 590s or 6990s. Only reason I'm not really going with Amd is that 6990 crossfire are known to be trouble some, coupled with the insane heat and uber noise, its enough to make me cringe and pass. They're still selling a bit higher than the 590 and they do have the extra power. But really, crossfire 6990 is better off on water and if you can deal with the drivers.

Crysis 2 without the high-res textures I presume? It will be hitting a VRAM wall, as the DX11 tesselation is seriously over the top.

I'd never even think about going quad-SLI, and if you did, bear in mind it's only buying you an extra 256MB of VRAM per GPU. I don't think that'll really improve things too much if you start turning settings up again... frown.gif

If I was thinking about AMD, I'd go 7950 CF, simply for the 3GB of VRAM. It's troublesome that the 3GB 580s are holding thier value so well, or that would be a good option.

All the settings were set to extreme (second highest if I recall).

I did talked to a few sli owners and i watched a few vids of quad. Interesting but vram is still ~1.5gb. Yeah, it sucks how 580s are still high mad.gif. If I can score a couple 7970s ~$300 usd a piece, that would be a great setup. 7950s are holding their price too. I guess they are more coveted since the 660ti was good but not enough for a threat frown.gif

The hardest part is selling the old setup. I'll see what happens.

I know how that feels; trying to sell my 2GB 460s has been more difficult than I anticipated after how easy selling the 1GB ones was. I've actually got quite a few bits I want to sell at the minute.

Yeah, its tough selling right now frown.gif

I know a lot of ppl didn't see the oc3d sli review of the 590 positively but just comparing the metro and crysis 2 scores to crossfire 7970s is a really interesting. The average frames on sli 590s is 53 in metro compared to 33 for xfire 7970s. Crysis 2 hits 89 with the 590s and 46 for the 7970s. I'm really siding that horsepower really can push fps even with a vram handicap. They're roughly the same price and all the reviews show how quiet the 590 is compared to the 6990.

Don't know....if I can sell these current gpu and sell my replacement mb, I can scrape enough for a couple of preowned 590s.....very tempting biggrin.gif
