The AMD drivers are definitely a love/hate thing for sure. However, I have read a lot of positive feedback regarding the new 12.8 drivers though, which seems to have not only fixed a number of issues, but also improved performance overall.
Looking over the 7990 review, it is an impressive piece of hardware, although, I'm concerned over some of the scaling problems in the Eyefinity resolution. Plus, it is a decent-sized chunk of change more for what is ultimately supposed to be 7970 CF performance.
Personally, for the maximum bang for the buck at triple 1080p resolutions, I think the 7970's still win with the least amount of hassles (assuming a problem-free experience with their latest drivers). wink.gif If it weren't for the fact that I wanted to play Borderlands 2 with full PhysX on, I would have opted for a 7970 myself for the same price I paid for my 670. eek.gif

That's why its tough to choose redface.gif. I've found a couple of 7970s in another forum at great prices and I'm really tempted to get them. They can hit 1300 apparently but I'm not sure if that will be a significant boost in Eyefinity. I posted in the 79xx club for some feedback.

The GTX 690 doesn't compare to CF HD7970. They will smoke it unrelentingly at about half the price especially if they are overclocked.
Unless you want an easy Quad SLI setup or you really in need for the extra space inside your case then the GTX 690 doesn't worth it.

Two cards will be slightly better than a single dual-gpu card. The 690 is an option for me since I really don't want to pay tje 680 premium, especially for sli. Last week, this guy sold a month old 690 for $750. Most are going for $800, and new ones are tipping $900. I laugh at those who are asking full retail for new and laugh harder for those offering used ones at this price biggrin.gif.

I won't do 670s. The scaling is not as good as the 680 at this resolution and the 7970 starts to pull ahead of it. Its an awesome card at single monitor resolutions but I've crossed that off from my list.

I have have bad luck with AMD cards and good luck with nvidia, so I went with team green. I'm sure I would've loved 7970s, but I went with what has worked for me in the past. Plus, I hear the non-reference 670s overclock pretty darn well.
I get Borderlands 2 with those so that is $60 I didn't have to spend on that (i was planning on getting the game anyways) and I'll sell my other copy to my roommate for $50. Plus they both have $20 rebates right now. I think they are a great deal. i can't wait to play Borderlands 2 on my 3 screens biggrin.gif I really wanted to run full Physx too, another reason I went with nvidia.

Nice, would like to hear how your experience is. Congrats on the purchase btw thumb.gif

At this price GTX 690 is a steal. especially if it is compared to GTX 680 SLI. But at $1200 it is really hard to recommend considering GTX 680s SLI only $1000 and HD 7970 CF are about $850-$900 it also won't come close to them especially because dual-gpu cards don't OC well.
If the 7970s you found can do 1.3 GHz then a GTX 680 won't come close to them unless the 680 reaches 1.4 GHz.

Will try them out and report back; I've been having some odd framerate drops in Saints Row 3 on 304.79 that I never experienced with 301.10. It's like the game will lock up for a second, acting like it wants to crash, then sorts itself out. Windows doesn't report any issues or driver recoveries. It's very rare, though - I can play for a couple of hours and not have one, or play for twenty minutes and have a couple of 'em.

Congrats on the second child on the way. smile.gif

Of the options you presented, I'd probably want to go 7970CF. I just don't believe 2GB of VRAM is enough to turn details up all the way; although I do think 670 4GB SLI would probably manage without too many issues. You're right about the price premium, though... it's even worse in the UK - 4GB 670s are nearly the price of 2GB 680s. And 4GB 680s are extortionate.

If I could find air-cooled 3GB 580s for ~ £200 a go, I'd try Tri-SLI with them. Unfortunately, the only 3GB cards now seem to have waterblocks on them already. That's great, but I can't afford three of 'em, plus pump/res/rad/cpu-block at the minute. wink.gif

While my 4870X2 was a good card, I'm leery of dual-GPU in general, especially since newer chips are so hot. That said, if I could get a good price on one, I'd probably go for it.

I realise that's not very helpful. wink.gif

If you do go CF, don't forget us, eh? wink.gif

there are benches out there that show that a 690 is only 1-2 fps ahead of sli 670s and that sli 680s are faster. Especially after you overclock 670s or 680s it's faster than single 690 and you have bigger ram options on the 670 and 680 cards.

7970 will pull away in some games, but if you feel like dealing with amd's rollercoaster train with drivers go for it biggrin.gif

To be honest, both AMD and nVidia are rollercoaster rides nowadays when it comes to drivers. AMD are slightly worse, I guess, but their main issue is Tri/Quad-Fire...

Quad is bad on both sides with the older series. Surprisingly it seems to be doing really good with the 7970s (check the 3dMark11 scores thread). 3-way sli has been pretty good on both sides though I haven't seen much of the 6xx series lately.

Well, I'm narrowing it down to one setup. Need to sell stuff first and I'll start pulling the trigger. Thanks for the help guys thumb.gifthumb.gifthumb.gif

Very tempting but this will give me ammo to get "a few" of them preowned at much lower than what ppl are asking for them.

I noticed last night when I start up my computer, the task bar was on the correct screen [4th monitor] but after a minute or two it jumps down to the middle monitor of the surround setup. And also last night, it loaded up crashed for the first time in a long time. What I mean by crashed, I am able to click on the windows start button, but I am unable to move the task bar to anywhere [No the task bar is not locked] and icons on the task bar is not refreshing it's self either. Sometimes, my system volume mixer crashes as well, but I am unsure if this is connected. This is truly terrible, but I do not know what is even causing these issues.

Yeah, Quad GPU is really only for benchers - the only things the drivers seem optimised for with Quad-anything is benchmarks like 3D Mark. rolleyes.gif Triple used to be a wealth of pitfalls on the AMD camp, but I've not seen much about the 7000 series. Mostly it's just people stuck in the past saying "oh, I had 4870 Quad-CF and it sucked!" or "CF on 5000 series was terrible"... well, yeah, the drivers we a lot less mature. wink.gif

Wish you luck. smile.gif
