Have been looking at the Korean style 27" IPS screens but unsure of their usefulness in nVidia Surround.
Dont link me to any site in the US or similar, I live in Australia so most places wont ship to here, especially the southern most state of Australia.
Or should i be asking this in the section i mentioned before?

I use 3x 2560x1440 (2x korean Crossovers, 1 Apple Cinema) screens for nvidia surround with 2 GTX 670 FTWs in SLI. I personally wouldn't get them for surround gaming, I'm using them primarily for media production, your frame rates will be lack luster in any of the more demanding games (BF3, Skyrim, GW2, WoT, etc). Right now they work fine for Dishonored and Borderlands 2 maxed but that's about it. I don't stay current with the models out there but your best bet is 3 x 27" 1080p monitors for gaming and the korean 1440p monitors if your getting more GPU power from this gen or next for whatever purposes

Cheers for the info, gives me a better perspective on what i can use with my current setup.
Just another question though. say i get 2 or 3 of the korean monitors that are running 2560x1440, would it be beneficial to run them at 1080 for games and then on exit switch to full resolution?
Can surround do such a thing or i suppose its set in the game settings.
Or would it still be better to get 27" or 24" that run at a max of 1080p?
I've dabbled with that concept myself, its nice to run at 3240x1920 (portrait 3x1080p, don't use horizontal) sometimes but I just get the feeling I'm missing out on what the real resolution available can show me, performance wise though it'll let you play everything smoother but I personally haven't tried on a majority of my games, just BL2, Dishonored, and Gw2. I don't see a lack of sharpness in BL2/Dishonored either so that's a plus.

Also yah it's just using in game settings to play at that resolution, it'll switch itself back no problem to full surround settings.

Up to you with the 27 vs 24 1080p, budget 27 inch 1080p are out there and you'd probably spend half of the price of the 3 korean monitors for em. Bigger is always better, though, with monitors imo. You get used to the size so stick with the 27 ideas instead of 24. The 3 korean monitors will be your best bet in the end, slightly pricier being a given, but desktop use on 1080p 27 inches will be a meh experience (after you use a 1440p monitor at least or if you like higher ppi displays)

Nice setup! How often do you see yourself going over 2gb vram? For ex. can you run BF3 ultra 4xMSAA with a high framerate in 64 MP? Or do you decrease the AA?

1920x1080 gaming res on a 1920x1080 monitor will look much better than 1920x1080 on a 2560x1440 monitor. Now IPS is a different story.

The number of pixels in an LCD results in its native resolution – for example, a monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution has 1920x1080 pixels.

When an LCD monitor runs in its native resolution – 1920x1080 in the example above — each pixel on the LCD corresponds to a pixel in the image sent by your computer’s video card. This produces a sharp, clear image.

Now, imagine that your computer’s video card sends an 1680x1050 image to a 1920x1080 LCD — you’ll see that the 1680x1050 image doesn’t evenly correspond to the number of pixels in the LCD. To produce an image smaller than its native resolution, the display would still be using 1920x1080 pixels – so the display must interpolate (scale) the image to be larger and fill the screen. In the example here the aspect ratios are different, so not only will the image be enlarged, the image will be distorted.

What you just described, is that just for non IPS/PLS screens or is it for screens in general?
If it is just for your usual non IPS/PLS screen, what difference will the IPS/PLS make when running at a different resolution?

Yes it will be the same effect as IPS/PLS is still using a LCD technology.

Now if you are comparing IPS LCD vs TN LCD, the IPS will have better color reproduction and better viewing angles. But the decreased resolution effect will remain the same.

Yeah, we may end up trying that. But colleagues are protective of their work, and 'cloud' servers make them very nervous. They make me wary, too, for that matter.

Unless you want to go to 4GB cards, I'd avoid the 1440p 27" monitors as 2GB cards will struggle to provide enough framebuffer.

If you can find Dell U2311H's or U2410/2412's refurbed, that might be the way to go.

Honestly, I'm using 3x1080p monitors and I am consistently over the 2gb threshold playing games at 5880x1080.... thankfully I did opt for the 4Gb cards instead of the 2Gb versions because of what happened with my 5970 and 5850's (still have). If my 5970, 5850's, and gtx 480's all had 3+ GB of VRAM per GPU they still be pretty good...because they still have the horsepower in crossfire/SLI for new titles. That also tells me that the 670 4gb will have enough horsepower to last years even for surround gaming thumb.gif (multiple cards anyway lol).... but then again I'm just making myself feel better about spending to much on a computer that I don't use nearly enough to justify the cost lol cheers.gif

I'm not a avid BF3 player. Infact the only reason I got the game is pretty much to benchmark my system and compare to others. I've never been in any 64 player battles, but in ultra settings with 4xMSAA, I'm getting 45-55fps with about 2700MB of memory usage. With no MSAA, it's about 2100MB of memory with slightly better fps. Currently I mostly play Dirt3 and Boarderlands2. In Dirt3 with High settings and 8xMSAA/8xCSAA, I'm getting between 1900-2100MB usage depending on the track/weather with constant 60fps (adaptive vsync enabled). All of this is with OC to 1200/6800.

That also tells me that the 670 4gb will have enough horsepower to last years even for surround gaming thumb.gif (multiple cards anyway lol).... but then again I'm just making myself feel better about spending to much on a computer that I don't use nearly enough to justify the cost lol cheers.gif
Yeah, I regularly need to tweak settings to avoid butting into that 2GB limit I'm on. It's always really painful when I do, as well: Saints Row 3, 5760x1200 at Ultra will be butter smooth most of the time, right on the hairline of VRAM limit... when I get somewhere that needs new textures, it runs out of VRAM and framerate drops to single digits until it can page out unneeded textures and page in the needed ones. I half wish I'd waited for the 4GB cards to arrive, but then I realise that I've had loads of fun with this one anyway. biggrin.gif

Scan had EVGA 4GB cards in their daily deal yesterday. Wish I'd bitten on a couple of 670s. frown.gif
