personally, I would go with the three 1440 monitors biggrin.gif. You're gonna need at least a 2nd gtx 680 4gb for either setup tbh. Three for the 1440s is my recommendation.

hey guys, I sold one of my 590s and I'm hoping the other sells soon. Still at a cross road on what to get: 3x 7970s or 4x 580 3gbs. 7970s are still new and the drivers are iffy, but my current mb can do 3 or 4 way crossfire. The 580s are sweet as I had three of them before and I would just need a 4-way sli mb and to find these hard to find 3gb versions frown.gif. I'm still irked about Nvidia's move on handicapping the 6xx series so I'll skip that. I'm leaning on the 580s since I can find the blocks for cheap everywhere and I'm still bummed I sold my triplets last year due to a money crunch. With the 580s I could only afford three atm but a 4th would be in the mix shortly afterwards and they're dropping in price. I'm a little scared with the 7970s as they draw as much if not more power than Fermi gtx 480 (eek.gif). Thanks for any input!

i see lots of updates in here since i've been away.. (new job start, buying a house and moving into said house have kept me away) but now that things are slowly settling down again.. i'm about to put my office back together and will be adding the 4gb 680 FTW+ that i just ordered to the mix for my surround setup.. thumb.gif Can't wait to get back into Borderlands 2 in surround!

Well i play a lot of 1st person shooters. IMO screen motion factors very heavily when gaming, especially online multiplayer where every millisecond counts. I also went through this same dilemma of 7680x1440 60hz vs 5670x1080 120hz. After much research I found the current GPUs are just not up for the task of 7680x1440 like I would want them, @60FPS with the newer GPU/CPU intensive titles. Although THIS GUY has 7680x1440 with 670 4gb SLI and he states he gets around 30FPS on games which aint bad at all for that res. PM him for further info if interested.
I went with 120hz monitors for the increased motion, and the option to play games in 3d surround, which dont work well in all games but the ones that do are are mind blowing!!

I would definitely go with the x3 7970s. From what I have seen they scale great with multiple cards at high resolutions. Even better that the 600 series cards with their limiting 256 bit memory interface mad.gif The only reason I didnt go with the 7000 series cards is due to 3d which Nvidia is 100x better and AMD cant go 3d with multiple screens yet. I have never seen the 7970s consume more power than the power hungry 480s. From what Ive seen the 7970s have been great in the power consumption category.

But just remember the 8000 series cards will be coming out in a few months so if you can it would be in your best interest to wait. But i know waiting SUCKS!

I do love the 7970s but three outfitted with water will break my budget. three 580 3gbs for now and a month later a 4th is possible. I'm more inclined with the 580s since i may have a cheap water solution that may be available soon. If not, I'm scour for 7970s and blocks (its harder than the plentiful 580 blocks). Really tempted to go with four 6970s since there's a bunch of them with blocks fitted on them already. This would be cheaper and slightly more powerful option than my old 590s. Damn, these 590s sold on ebay within a few hours. I even asked for top dollar. Well, now to think it over on which upgrade to fallow redface.gif

I know of quad 7970 owners hitting more 1800w at the socket (yikes!). Max I could push my old quad 480 setup was~1750w at the wall.

1800w at the socket!!! eek.gif Man Im really not familiar with the OCing characteristic of the 7970, but I find 1800w hard to believe even with the highest OC. Has to be including a insane CPU OC with that also???
Highest I have seen from my quad 670s is 1060w from the wall with all 670s OC to 1200mhz and 3930 5ghz.

Check out Tsm106s monster build. I think he hit 27k in 3dMark11. Yeah, he's pulling some insane numbers. I had this confirmed by other quad owners too. The 7970 is the new gtx 480 when it comes to power consumption. The new Nvidia 6xx series is much power friendly which was a leap in the right direction for gpu development. I'm going to skip quad 7970s. I was pondering quad 7950s but blocks are still hard to come by preowned. .

I gave up 3d for 3x 27" 1440p ...I also have a 55" 3dtv if I need 3d that bad, but I sold my 27" 3d monitor because I never used the 3d and really didn't do much for me... I like watching movies in 3d much more than gaming in 3d(personal preference)
