and just to throw it out there Nightscar, if you got 670 FTW 4GB cards instead of the 680 FTW's... you be within 5% of the performance for $300 less biggrin.gif. But tri 680's would be for "Just Because" lol

Come to think of it, every game i have tried with the 4gb card goes over the 2gb mark with triple screens and the settings I use to play. The only exception is iRacing but it does excede 2gb on a few of the tracks. I'm sure once the othet 670 gets here I will be way over the 2gb mark and probably in the 3s most of the time. For the few extra dollars you have to spend to get a 4gb card I don't know why anyone wouldn't do it if they plan on running triple screens.

Fresh install of windows and my new (and quite fast) ssd things are very smooth. I'm a little rusty on Crysis WH redface.gif. I just finished downloading BF2; I want to start and finish this before BF3.

I do a little over clocking but not to much, makes me nervious..
I just want to be able to run 3 27inch screens in nvidia surround..
If that means getting a 4th gtx680..
Im just curious to know what you will need to run that 3 27 inch screen setup
And play anygame on or above 60fps..

The thing with the 4GB cards and AMD's 3GB cards is caching of textures. I happily play BF3 at 5760*1080 with full ultra settings and VRAM usage sits at ~2000mb. I turned my pagefile off to see if it would use more than the 2GB available (if it did, it would crash) but that never happened. I do have Aero disabled when I play BF3 to help save a little on VRAM.

2GB isn't enough. Period.

GTX 690 vs my GTX 680 4GB is laughable at the difference. Smooth and then when the VRAM wall hits boom down to FPS in the 10-20s and stays there. With the GTX 680 4GB SLI that never happens.

With BF3 maxed out it uses way over 2GB VRAM. With no AA, no motion blur, no HBAO you're sitting at around 1700-1800MB of VRAM and even on those settings some maps go over 2GB. That's the best you can do with 2GB.

People can argue it all day until they are blue in the face. The GTX 690 owners thread has proved it countless times and I suggest if you want to try and run a 2GB surround set-up you take a look at that thread before buying because I had a GTX 690 and although the card was a beast the VRAM rendered it useless for surround gaming.

Sure you could play with medium settings but who buys a $1000 GPU and spends over $1000 on screens to play without the highest settings.

1440P doesn't need AA but even then it'll go way over 2GB usage in new games like Hitman, Max Payne, BF3, FC3 etc.

Because he's a novice rig builder I'd tell him to shy away from 1440Px3 and go for 120FPS Samsung screens instead. Even 120FPS Eyefinity.

Thats a pretty bold statement there buddy. I have 2gb versions of the 670s and 5760x1080 is running fine for me. BF3 multiplayer 5760x1080 with Ultra settings and HBAO except FXAA, (no motion blur crap) runs @ 1700-1750mb. With those settings and 2xMSAA it goes up to 1900-1950mb. But I run in FXAA because I want as close to a constant 120fps at 5760x1080 as possible. Of course this is with Aero disabled.

So saying 2gb is useless in surround gaming is completely wrong. You just have to be knowledgeable enough on how to tweak your system, and not have a bunch of processes running in the background.

Dont get me wrong the 4gb cards would be great also. You will have more options to be able to use more mods in games and your cards will be more future proof. Also you have the option of increasing MSAA 4x and above, but at a cost of lower FPS. But with 2 680/670s @ 5760x1080 and the newer GPU intensive games, to reach the goal of 60fps, MSAA will need to be reduced anyways. Lower GPU intensive games like COD & Counter Strike: GO have no problems with MSAA all the way maxed with 2gb cards. The only one game that I ran out of VRAM before I ran out of GPU horsepower is Max Payne 3 in 3d surround.

But yes in 95% of games the 2gb Kepler cards will run out of GPU performance before VRAM at 5760x1080.

With that being said if i had to buy the cards again I would buy the 4gb versions so I would have more options and more future proofing, but saying the 2gb version are useless is just not correct.

This.
I'm only running2x 680's to power my three vg278h's so the fact is I have to turn down one or two setting to make them playable at a good fps. The first I would turn down is MSAA so Vram has NEVER been an issue with my 2gb cards.

I never undestand the people who say "2GB isn't enough VRAM at 5760*1080 in BF3". I have played that game on "Full Ultra" and have never run out of VRAM. I have done this in SP and MP to see if I could breach the 2GB available but it didn't. Like Emett states, GPU grunt is the issue and I also tone down a couple of settings to maintain 60+fps to keep the game smooth.

Far Cry 3 I have turned settings down to medium on DX9 to try and stop the stutter (it has helped it tremendously). Again though, I never ran out of VRAM but the game was just unplayable because of the stutter (not slideshow).
