I want to build a surround setup to power 3x 23" monitors at 5760x1080 resolution @ fairly decent quality with a single card. I am kind of torn on what to get. This will have to fit in a Node 304 or smaller mini-ITX case which luckily is most current gen cards at least on the nvidia side.

But I am deciding if I should get a 670 or 680 and weather or not to get 2GB or 4GB of vram on board.

Games I do play (with high texture mods if I can get away with it)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Planetside 2
Metro 2033
Dishonored
Borderlands 2

Thinking I should get the 680 since I upgrade about every 4-5 generations or so for a little extra padding or if I should save a little and get a 670 4GB for the extra ram for future games but still get fairly close on the performance. I am not someone that has to be oooh shiney ultra res / 16x AA etc. But the higher the quality I can pump out now will help keep games that come out in the future at least playable. At least that is my look on things.

The AMD cards have frame delay, which causes stutters and other un-smooth game play. Even though they have higher frame rates, the game isnt as smooth as on an Nvidia card. This is has been linked a few pages back.

I too wanted a single card to run 5760x1080. After tons of going back and forth between a 670 4GB and 680 2GB, I got the 680. For $415 on Amazon you can get a warehouse deal like new MSI twin frozr. The MSI cards do warranty by serial number, and Amazon has a no hassle 30 day return policy for any reason, and they pay the return shipping. There is no risk at all in getting that. Mine didnt look like it had been used at all, and came with the box and all papers/extras.

A single card isnt going to need 4GB, because a single card wont be in a situation where it is using more then 2GB and still at a playable frame rate. [H]ardOCP tested two 670 SLI 4GBs in surround, and even with two cards couldnt make any real difference between them and the 2GB SLI setup.

I just got the 680 today, and the stock boost is 1189Mhz. Havent OCed it yet, but with stock fan profile, it topped at 60C and 45% fan speed in a 70F room. Most the twin frozrs Ive seen do at least 1250-1300 core speed. The custom PCB uses less power too and only needs 2x6pin instead of 6+8.

I couldnt get over 2GB usage running Skyrim with high res texture mods, 6000x1080 4xAA and all maxed out settings. BF3 is playable on ultra settings with the FXAA injector, and Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 are about the only things off the top of my head that cant really be "maxed" out on a single card.

$900 suggested price, and not a 780. Its a "titan", so probably be like x85 or x89 or something number?

Plus, two 680s can be had for $100 less then that.

Nvidia announced a while back the 7 series wouldnt come before March 2013. So Im expecting mid April before you can buy a 780 thats in stock and not super over priced.

I just want a card with a slight bump in cores over the 680, and at least 384bit/3GB. Something a little better then the 7970 with the same mem and bandwidth for $500 would be great.

Deserved comments and 3 of the 5 games are PhysX and Skyrim comes with AO which is only good for Nvidia cards (unless I have that wrong).

I just done some self harming and I am back on track. Nvidia all the way smile.gif

One gripe though, I did some testing with the 310.xx drivers and they never felt smooth like 306.97/23 did, so I ran fraps frame latency tests and shocking results with BF3 and Far Cry 3. I rolled back to 306.23 and great results with BF3. Far Cry 3 is horrid and I believe this is at game level more than driver.

New branch of drivers for Nvidia next week and I have a good feeling for these, as they are taking a new branch. Hopefully, good from the off smile.gif

nVidia crippled the potential of the GTX 680, they could have widened the bus for one.
yes I know benches show the 256-bit bus standing up well but imagine what the 680 could have been.
answer I hope = GTX 780..

sort of a better improvement than the GTX 480 to the GTX 580 was, my opinion..

I am waiting for "Titan" 384 Bit bus and 2880 cuda cores are promising stats. Claims of 85% the power of a 690 but at a price of $900. If it delivers like the rumours suggest, I will get 2 of them.

My 680 at 1255core 6550mem does heaven max settings 5760x1080 with 20.4FPS average vs 6.6FPS with the 660TI at 1200core 6500mem. Thats more then 3x the performance. In a normal situation (1080P and playable frame rates), the 680 is about 35% faster then the 660TI. So that shows how much of a drop the 192bit bus on the 660TI makes since there isnt that much of a difference in the cores.

I got my 3 gtx 670 4gb cards today, and tbh I am very disapointed. 50% of my games wont work due to aspect ratio problems, the performance in the ones that do run is HORRIBLE. in bf3 ultra settings no AA and no hbao or ssao I get 30ish fps. On 3 cards??? On skyrim I get about 30 fps in high to mid settings. (not to mention there is a ridiculous input lag which makes the game unplayable) This honestly doesnt make any sense. Anyone got any ideas?
