post #3121 of 8970
I have been speaking with AllGamer in the 690 club thread, and I would like to include the Mini-Displayport adapter I am currently using for my 6 monitor display for anyone that is interested.

I believe this is not active, but it works. [eForCity Mini Display Port to DVI Male / Female Adapter] http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DHSIWK/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01

Didn't work, wasn't active? [Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable, 6 feet] http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OC6LWM/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

I prefer this over the MB support, because I have the able to change gamma, color, etc per monitor with Nvidia control panel. Setting up the fourth monitor wasn't too bad, however I did buy a couple of cabling. For example, mini displayport to X adapters. MDP To HDMI and another cable that escapes my memory right now would not work correctly, but a MDP to DVI female did it for me. It did take me a while to troubleshoot this, but the cost was minimal at the price point of 10 dollars for all cabling plus an HDMI cable. For drivers, lately it hasn't been bad at all. However before, setting up surround vision would make most people cry, at least it did for me.

Accell makes some good ones. I buy them for AMD cards smile.gif

Also, XFX makes one which is active too.

The active ones are about ~$30-50 and the passive (not the one you want) ~$15-25.

Mini DP:

edit: here's the standard DP one:

Now if only AMD would make another EyeFinity 6 card, I'd see about a 5x1P+1 setup... biggrin.gif (Maybe we'll get lucky with the 8000 series...?)

Or nVidia, I ain't fussed really. biggrin.gif I just want 5x1P. biggrin.gif

Awesome read! Too bad only a few games can actually get good use out of that card at 3x1080p. For example, Bf3 and Metro there's only a 14 to 16 fps between difference the 690 and ares ii with 7970 falling behind in both games. Where crossfiring 2x ares ii actually came in handy for bf3 and metro, and the rest of the games in 3x1080p did do much at all. And on the topic of 7970, actually not one game did the 7970 do better then the 690 at all in their test.
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_ares_ii_2_review,26.html
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_ares_ii_2_review,27.html

Am I missing something here? Why does it seem like everyone is freaking about out vram with the 690 and going over to X card with more vram, but yet benchmarks show the 690 better option or still a really strong card? Please clear this up for me. I am highly confused.

@3x1080p: 7990 was higher only by 10fps more then 690 in some games, other games 690 won against them all:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7990-devil13-7970-x2,3329-7.html

@1660p bf3: 680 sli beat both 690 and 7970 at 1660p
http://www.guruht.com/2012/06/gtx-690-vs-hd-6990-vs-hd-7970-cf.html

@1660p metro: 690 beats 7970 by 17fps

because vram doesn't matter unless you are on 1440p/1440p surround or use insane amount of texture mods at the current time. GPU's still aren't fast enough to take advantage of more vram. and people instantly think more vram = faster graphics card. First and foremost raw gpu power > vram

not to say that will remain true for lat e 2013/2014 games. but as of right now 2gb is enough at 1080p/1080p surround and even 1440p in most cases. People also like to believe that just because bf3 is using 2500mb of ram that omg must have 4gb cards when that's completely inaccurate.

i still stand by why in the world did they limit the 690 to 2gb though.

I as well feel the same way video card power vs vram. It would be nice to have a higher vram on the 690, but really it doesn't seem to matter. All of those links provide what I am say.

Aint that the truth... display port is cool and all but the added cost for decent monitors with a native display port or purchasing display port adapters seems not worth it...

So I'm getting a GTX 670 4GB since the manufacturer no longer has GTX 580 3GBs in stock (warranty). Read a few reviews (triple 1080/1200) and they're pretty even. I have all the hardware ready for another 580 but i would need to switch everything if I keep the 670 4gb (and add more).

Also contemplating sli 690s or quad 7970s biggrin.gif

Appreciate any input guys and gals thumb.gif

The Kepler should be arriving next week smile.gif
