Intel build?

Thread Starter
I am considering building a new pc (gaming rig). It will be my first build and there are many options available. I go back and forth between the amd-fx60 and the 955 EE. The AMD will be releasing their AM2 in a few months so I would have to upgrade my mobo and processor. However, if I opt for the Intel mobo and 955 EE I will only have to upgrade my cpu (conroe) in Sept., which I don't mind.

The 955EE is kind of intimidating because of the heat issues. I plan on spending $3500-4000 on my rig. Would it be best to go with Intel and just upgrade my cpu to the conroe in Q3? What could I do to deal with the heat issues? If you think I should build with Intel can you list all the recommended parts (RAM, PSU, Fans, etc.).

Thanks

Hi wolar and welcome to the forums

Is purchasing your new build something you need to do fairly quickly? The reason I ask is because if you are able to wait until June/July you will be able to purchase a Conroe CPU which is so far beyond anything AMD/Intel has out at the moment.

It takes companies around 5 - 10 years to create a new processor architecure and Intel's Conroe is out so soon that it would behoove anyone wishing to build at this time to wait a few months for this exciting new processor.

Check the forum search out on the Conroe if you have the time to wait. Since it is for gaming I would wait if I were you.

If you are planning on upgrading to Conroe, I wouldn't purchase a 955 since that is money down the drain. I have one and it's great, but I plan on using it for a few years. Get a 920 or 930 and overclock since HT doesn't help you for games would be my suggestion.

I recommend getting a 920 or 930 for cheapo, and the ASUS P5WD2-E Premium motherboard so that you can upgrade to Conroe in the future.

Pentium D 920 $252

ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe $195
or
P5WD2-E Premium $219

Thats one hefty hunk to spend on a computer, lucky you! Definately wait for a Conroe, they will outperform anything on the market now. New architecture and they perform many more operations per cycle than before, meaning their speed may be lower but in turn still a way faster computer. What kind of cooling are you looking to get?

I'm not sure what cooling to get. If you have any recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

When is that Conroe going to launch? I have heard Sept. and July.

6-6-06 is the rumor for the Conroe launch.

For cooling a Big Typoon is the best air cooler. Or you can go watercooling for about $200.

Everybody around here likes the Big Typhoon.......unfortunately I don't.

The best LGA 775 heat-sink/fan would be the Tuniq Tower 120. I'd buy it but my next cooling deviced will be a Swiftech H20-220 APEX ULTRA Liquid CPU cooling kit.

Lol, 6/6? You're looking at 4 to 6 months. 6/6/06 is AMD's release date for socket AM2.
