okay i am puting an abit mobo in my computer. in order to do that i would need a new xp os(in theory). instead of paying 200 for the full version i want to buy the upgrade(upgrades from win 98, nt, me ect) could i use a system recovery(win 98) from my older hp on my new hp? or should i get a 98 disk off ebay?

Why don't you just buy Windows XP Home Editon OEM for $89?

You wouldn't need anything else but just that disc.

No need to have or upgrade from.

If you have a full version of Windows installed, the upgrade version should work just fine. However, Windows works best after a HDD format. The upgrade version does work on a clean drive, however, the installation sequence requires you to insert a valid Windows disk for verification of ownership. To pull that off, you'd have to buy the XP upgrade and any valid version of Windows (Win95 usually works fine). With all that hassle, I'd agree with Nasgul - a full version of XP Home is a good deal at around $90, and you can get an OEM version of XP Pro for around $140.

Most likely not. I think HP does the same thing as Dell and puts a check in the install to make sure you are using it on their computers. By switching motherboards you change what the disk looks for and it may not work. I agree with Nasgul, get the XP Home and be done with it.

Wait I think you can do it, you can do a clean install of XP right from the upgrade disk, You need the legal copy of windows which you have. Format your HDD, then put in the upgrade disk, it will ask you to put in your original version of Windows, once it verifies you have a legal copy of Windows it will do a complete clean install of XP.

and if that doesen't work (XP Home OEM)
