well i hate to crap on the parade but i own a area51m-7700 desktop replacement....
after investigating the company, etc, etc (which i should have done before i bought the thing instead of looking for "good things about it") they are full of crap...alot of people dont know that there tech support and customer service is sometimes out of the country.costa rica,etc,etc..if you ever spoke with one of them you'd soon realize that they barely speak english..sometimes if your lucky you might get somebdy who speaks ok..btw...my unit dies on me..i needed a new motherboard, cpu, and ram stick....how can a company that charges so much $$$ products die so quickly..im not a gamer either...i bought it cause i thought it was top of the line..(stupid me-i had a $3800 boat anchor on my hands for awhile)..after fighting with them for a few days i relaized i was screwed..they didnt want to help me in anyway..see the bad bit about this product is when something major goes wrong its next to impossible to get replacement parts..like MB's....you MUST go thru them or find a rare alterantive-which i did and happy i did.i refused to give them another dime!! this compnay is so wacky that they refused to get a supervisor on the phone to speak with you saying its "against policy"..you can feel the fear the CS have when things arise of that nature...they read from scripts...they ALL say the same things..even the tech support people..i dont even think they really know what there talking about either...
before my unit died the main issue i had was it thought it was plugged in when it wasnt..that was a sign that something was wrong with the mb or the cpu or both! there tech people had no clue and never heard of such a thing..well i was told it had to be sent back but to keep using it to see if anything else arises until i got a rma#..well it did..fire practically broke out!!smoke, and burned parts..after that i opened it up to find my MB fried litterally to ash....after calling them up and telling them what happened they announced that my wrranty had just expired!!! so instead of taking my unit and fixing/replacing the things wrong they just said they were sorry and wouldnt take any responsibilty especially knowing that there techs TOLD me to keep trying the unit till i got a rma#..my breakdown helped out others im sure..if this happened to anybody else they would know to tell them "dont use it"....

but i found another company to fix it and its running better than it ever did with the old alienware parts...
check out comparisons for yourselves..
_http://www.widowpc.com/2005/06/comparison.php
but after getting my unit back with new MB,cpu, and ram stick all is well until last night (check post i made in intel section)..not sure whats wrong now but hopefully it was nothing major cause all is fine at the moment..

well thats my alienware story so people please dont buy into there nonsense like i did...if you google alienware and read around you'll find lots of people wanting to sue them, etc, etc, etc

peace all
p.s..if posting a link to another company is bad please edit...im not promoting anything...

To be honest, AlienWare grossly overprice their gaming machines anyway. Who gives a monkeys who owns them?

Both make a good product but as we all know Dell made their big bucks from making reliable pc's for businesses and server applications. Alienware has just been around a long and been lucky enough to market themselves above their competition. Now if you want a nice custom pre-built gaming pc, you go to AAC or Falcon. I would just love to have that Liquid XS case, so nice.

Alienware broke some ground and established a market presence but Vodoo, Falcon Northwest and (now a days) dozens of other "top-end" custom PC builders are in the mix, and alinware (IMO) is no longer top dog. What used to be cool and cutting edge is now like owning a really nice SUV--anybody with the bucks can get one.

Building your own Hot Rod (or Chopper) is a whole different story.

If Dell is the Chevy, Alienware is the OCC of computers. Chevy may offer a few high performance models with some tasty options, but OCC will assemble what looks like a custom machine (but in fact is just assembly of readily available high end components and some flashy signature dressing...)

I would not care to own either. So in essence (IMO) the non-news of the rumored buy-out is little more than a burp in the airline of high performance desktop computing....

HI,
I was also foolish enough to by an alienware m 7700 desktop replacement machine only to experiance overwelming heat problems which fried my motherboard and gpu (go6800) within 2 months of purchasing the notebook (although not to ashes). Luckilly they followed the worranty and replaced the parts for free, however, because i live in Canada, they assumed they could get me on the shipping fees. I had to get a legal representative to call them in order to settle the situation. in other words, i threatened to sue. They fixed it, payed for the shipping, and sent it back in record time . I will never buy from them again and they know that. Mind you, i have learnt enough from trouble shooting this overpriced piece of crap to put my own system together. i only wish i knew it was so easy before hand.
Also, when it got back, there was like doble the cooling on it and that made me think that maybe this happened right after ur incedent and perhaps they are putting heatsinks to overlook the problem instead of fix it.
Anywho, i feel ur pain and noone bye alienware, u will feel like a real fool a couple of months after .
so i kept the cpu the motherboard and the case and built up from there and all is good now and has been for a while

Alienware has a contract with the American Military (engeneering corp and special forces) to supply them with powerfull diagnosis notebooks. This would be one reason to be sckeptical of Alienware being bought out.
