Going aftermarket on my 5870

Thread Starter
I'm tired of the 42% noisy fan when my card hits 82 degress while I am gaming..
I want my card silent, and more than all, cooler, for more room for overclocking
Suggestions of what could be the BEST aftermarket cooler in this case?
dual or tri slot coolers won't make a difference to me

My review of the icy vision

Well the AC cooler for my card has been riddled with problems, but the Arctic cooling cooler for hte 5870 has been considered "overkill" for how well it cools, as in 40-50 C load.

I thought it hasn't been released yet...

and yes, it does looks overkill, because the twin fan one can cool 120 watts and can be used as a quieter solution for the 5870...
now... the 5870 can top 250 watts, that's awesome!! but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere...

You could do a watercooling loop just for the gfx card. Look at the h50 thread and see if anyone has used the Corsair h50 cpu cooler for a gfx card - you'd need to get the h50 and a waterblock for your card.

What kind of problems have you had with your AC cooler? You have it on your 5970 right? I just ordered one for 5970 and hoping that I don't regret it. I have read review that go both ways, but generally it seems that some of the issues (DVI killing and vibration) aren't as much of an issue on the ASUS as the other models. Any tips on how to avoid the problems that you have had would be greatly appreciated.

I had the 4870x2 model from artic, and it did well.. only problem with it was that it didn't cool as well as they state it would, on their product's page

I don't really want to install and test it because I'm off time right now...

but looking at comparison charts, the difference between it and the stock cooler isn't big (not talking about noise)

but, problem is... mine has dead fans (reason why my 9800gtx+ died). I would have to improvisate to mount it... and I don't have anything to use as TIM for the mem and VRMs coolers
What should I use for this?

Considering this is my fourth 5970 after 3 rma's(not AC cooler related), I just want to enjoy it for awhile before putting mine on. But so long as you follow the revised instructions, the chances are much lower of doing any damage.

You're lucky then, their 4870x2 cooler was also marred with problems because the original screws that came with it were too short and broke cards as well.
