Which CPU is faster?

Hi guys, my little brother has a celeron d 335 @ 2.8ghz overclocked to 3150mhz, i got a laptop from a friend because he does not want it anymore and ripped it apart and it has a pentium 4 2.53ghz, is this good for overclocking
?
and will it be better for my littel brother, he plays halo and battlefield 2, so mainly for gaming and multitasking.

So whats faster,
celeron d 2.8
or
pentium 4 2.53

Thanks in advance for all feedback

It depends if the cpu you got iut of the lappy has a 800 fsb compaired to the cellys 533fsb I fthe p4 has an 800 fsb this will be faster even thoughthe celly is o/ced ..That p4 should easily reach the speeds of the celly when it,s oced and teh extra fsb will be an improvement

basically celeron are value cpu's, they have low L2 cache memory and
they really suck at games, the p4 would be the better choice

Well, make sure it is the same socket. Some laptop chips use a unique format for the socket, so make sure it is LGA 775 like the Celeron. If it is, then it could be quite a bit faster. Have you found any more info about the chip?

Sorry for double post, but isn't the 335 a 64-bit chip?

335 is for socket 478
335J is for socket 775 and is not 64 bit either (all J series on 775 are not 64 bit)

To answer the original question the P4 will be faster due to twice the L2 cache but the rest of the specs are basically the same (you can hit 3.1ghz on the P4 with some decent cooling).

The fsb is the same, the P4 has 533 fsb so the only real advantage it has is the L2 cache, its debatable how much performance increase you would actually notice.

the p4 will run smoother but how much smoother.

Ok guys thanks for the feedback got back from school today and swapped them, he has got a zalman 9500 with as5 compund and i have options to over clock it to 3800!!! 19 x 200 = 3800 right but i set it to 19 x 157 = 3000mhz as higher windows doesnt load?? boots find then gets to windows and gets stuck, if anyone knows how i get around this that would be great. The temps are all good below 40, I havent noticed much differnce on the actual gameplay but menues ect load up faster. It didnt complete 1mb on super pi, and it wasent even oc'ed much.maybe unlucky chip. But are you guys 100% sure it is faster then the celeron, because i am putting the one he doesnt use back in the laptop and fixing it and i dont want to rip him off. Also will the celeron run hotter in the laptop then the pentium 4 because i dont want to fry it and is it ok to use as5 on a laptop heatsink as i scraped off loads of !"£$ wot was on there and peeled off sum plastic thing, and i was jus guna slap sum as5 on the cpu and copper block. ??

They are both socket 478.

Well in a pure sense, the 2.8 celeron is "faster." But in terms of power, the P4 is.
