On a side note... Switches are cheap... your computer has a wired connection... 4 port 10/100 switch less than 20 dollars and 2 4-6 ft ethernet cables are cheap as well.

I know this wasn't the original intent of OP's post but it will get your laptop a connection to the network without having to take additional resources or put any additional load on your main rig.
