Stacking CPU components?

Thread Starter
I'm wondering if someone has designed a CPU where components are stacked(with the connections of each independent). Possibly with a material between them to redirect heat to another location. The height of said CPU would still be pretty small and you would be able to do more with chip design and layout if I'm correct.

i.e. if you a cpu had two cores instead of them being adjacent to each other they would be:

= Core 1
-Thin material to redirect or reduce transferability of heat
= Core 2

I just used the core for reference but why not with any component of the CPU or even the motherboard itself?

Sorry if this is an old idea, or just plain unfeasible but it crossed my mind.

This looks very close to what you're saying:

And I believe the APUs for the next gen consoles may be arranged something like this with the gpu and cpu stacked and connect with TSV (through silicon vias), so that they can share the same memory with almost the same latency.

OKAY SO I REALLY NEED TO CHECK ORIGINAL POST DATE NEXT TIME...
