Ordering my build Saturday - Please Critique ASAP $2500 Budget

Thread Starter
My tax return is finally here so I now have cash in hand to buy a new system. Please critique my build. I already have a monitor, keyboard & mouse and O/S. I am looking for feedback regarding compatibility issues, performance vs cost, if anything is overkill and unecessary & if the parts listed could be obtained at a lower rate than what I listed.
I will be using this to play Guild Wars, COD2, BF2, EQ2 and Oblivion as well as dvd burning. I would like to overclock (although I need to learn how to do this) and also future proof this as much as possible. My budget for this is $2500.00 US dollars (if you have a completely different build and stay within the $2500 budget I am open to anything).

$149.99Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window - Retail (will this case be cool enough or should I add any fans? my current computer over heats all the time)
$174.99ENERMAX Liberty ELT620AWT 620W Power Supply - Retail (is this overkill? If so what would be a suitable replacement)
$160.00Western Digital Raptor 74GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
$200.00Western Digital Caviar SE16 400GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
$73.99 SONY 16XDVD±R,5X DVD-RAM Write DVD Burner With Black front panel Beige E-IDE/ATAPI Model DRU820A - Retail (is this the best performance vs cost in a dual layer dvd burner?)
$139.99Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 2.1 Speaker - Retail
$121.99Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card - Retail (will having this help performance/sound quality over the on board audio to justify the cost?)
$59.99 ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball Blue LED Light Cooling Fan with Heatsink - Retail (will this be enough to keep my system running cool? As I noted earlier my current computer overheats and resets all the time)
$214.33OCZ Gold GX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - Retail (is this good for overclocking? Is it a good performance vs cost choice?)
$172.00DFI LP UT nF4 SLI-DR nVIDIA nFORCE4 SLI CHIPSET SERIAL ATA150 ATX FORM FACTOR 2xPCI-E(X16)/1xPCI-E(X4)/1xPCI-E(X1)/2xPCI/4xDDR W/SATA,RAID,DUAL LAN(Gb),1394,USB 2.0 & AUDIO (CPU TYPE:AMD ATHLON 64 - SOCKET 939) (I want to overclock and heard this was a good brand. I dont plan on having duel video cards so could I go with a lesser DFI board or stick with this one?)

I am having a hard time choosing a processor:
$453.50AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4400+ (ADA4400CDBOX) RETAIL BOXED W/1MB X 2 CACHE 90NM (TOLEDO) (is this better than the operton 175?)
$504.00 AMD Opteron 175 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail (Should I get this because of its overclockability?)

I am also having a hard time choosing a video card. Please keep in mind the games I want to play (Guild Wars, COD2, BF2, EQ2 and Oblivion):
$599.00ATI Radeon X1900XTX 100-435805 Video Card - Retail (If I go with this chipset what is the best card to get? Is the ATI version worth the extra money? Should I get a XTX or XT?)
$369.00eVGA Geforce 7900GT 256-P2-N565-AX Video Card - Retail (Which card with this chipset should I get? I listed the eVGA but should I get a different one? Is the GTX worth the extra money or should I go with the GT?)
$599.00eVGA Geforce 7900GTX 512-P2-N575-AX Video Card - Retail (Which card with this chipset should I get? I listed the eVGA but should I get a different one? Is this card worth the extra money or should I go with a GT?)

Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

I would get the 4400X2 over clock it to 2.6GHZ-2.7GHZ get the XFX 7900GT that cost 309 on newegg and sli them better than one 7900GTX
RAM go with the OCZPlatinum Revision 2
ASUSAN8-SLI Premium is good brand if you are novice overclocker im assuming sorry

other than that you are good it seems
that should be a sweet rig, but keep the motherboard you already planned on getting if you know how to overclock, the DFI's are nice for people who know what they're doing it seems. and like the guy above me said, just get 2 7900gt and overclock them to their max, that would give you really nice graphics until everything is converted to dx10

Do you want to spend all of your $2500?

You have a good selection! I would also go with 2 7900GT's (you can get them for $299 a piece) over 1 7900GTX.

Both the Asus and DFI motherboards are great! If your new to over clocking I would go with an Asus A8N-SLI Premium or an A8N32-SLI Deluxe. If your a fast learner than the DFI that you have chosen will treat you well.

You probably don't need to spend that much on a PSU. You can get a Sunbeam NUUO 550W for $79 and it is often recommended here by many members. Don't get the one I have lol!

For a sound card I would recommend an Audigy2 ZS. It's about half the cost and I think it will do just as well for what you want to do with your computer. I am not positive as I don't know that much about the card you have chosen. Anyone else have any info in this area?

Your case you have chosen ROCKS! It should do very well in the cooling dept.

OCZ ram is excellent but I would go with the platinum. Only other recommendation I could make is to get PC3500 or PC4000 for overclocking reason's.

Nice pick of CPU's. I am sure others will have different opinions but my opnion would be to get the x2 4400 and save $50. It is a very nice CPU and I wish I had one!

Hard drives, the raptors are an awesome choice for the OS drive! For storage I think you should get 2 160GB ($85 a piece) drives and run in a raid configuration or even 3 and run in raid 5.

I think that the sony is a bad choice for a DVD-RW DL. There are just as good or even better choices out there for less money. I use an NEC 3550A and it was $40 and works perfectly.

I would go with a Thermaltake Big Typhoon instead of the Zalman.

Hope this helps and others may have just as good opinions!

By the way! Welcome to the forum!

4400 X2 - $450
x1900xt - $430
2x1gb OCZ Platinum - $180

The x1900xt is the best bang for the buck in the highend market....it is better than a 7900gt, and is on par with a 7900gtx.

Don't get OCZ gold, it is just value ram with shinny non functional heatspreaders (look at its frequency and timmings.......its exactly like OCZ value ram).

Note: Dont get the x1900xtx! Its around $150 dollars more expensive than the x1900xt, and its clock rates are un-noticably higher.

OCZ ram is over rated IMO. I'd recommend Crucial Ballistix or G.Skill Extreme. As far as processor goes, get the Opteron 170 and save yourself a few bucks. With decent cooling you should be able to Overclock it to 2.8GHz.

I love my logitech z-5300. Great 5.1 system for about the same price. Not sure if you want to go the surround sound system way. But its a great system for the price. I got mine for about $130.

I think $175 is a little much for a power supply. I paid $89 for mine and its great.

I agree get two 7900GT's and overclock them. Also while your at it, get some nice cooling for them. Like the NV Silencer.

Ditch the Sony optical drive and get a cheaper one. I have a lightscribe drive thats supports dual layer and love it. And it was only 50 bucks. But i never use dual layer though. The media is more then 3-4 times that of standard dvd's. You can get 100 regular dvd's for about 30 bucks or you can get 25 Dual Layer dvd's for about 45-50 bucks.

Also get a Sata II hard drive if the motherboard you select supports it.

As for sound card, get the Creative X-FI. Its an awesome card. You will truely be amazed at the clarity and everything else about it.

And get a Big Tyhoon instead of the Zalman. It works great!

And I am guessing you are getting this all from newegg.com.
Someone posted a free shipping code in the off topic section thats supposed to start tomorrow.
It's "PCG10406" with out the quotes of course.

If you are going to game and want maximum frame rates then I would go for the Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty as it has 64MB of dedicated ram for storing the sounds of games.

Frame rates increase on the order of ~5fps with this card. It sounds much better than the Audigy as well.

i would go with a pair of GSkill memory. i cant confirm if its true or not, but i hear that OCZ and Mushkin mostly get their chips from GSkill and just put their fancy heatspreaders on it.
