1600x1200 faster than 800x600 ??

I've got a weird situation. I just got FEAR and wow is it ever a great game. I was amazed at how crappy my overclocked x800pro ran it . THe weirdest thing is it seems to run best on 1600x1200 resolution compared to a really low setting like 800x600. Any ideas about this thing?

FEAR usually has this little "prep" thing where it runs perfect at a supposidly slower fps, this usually is answered by this. Say your running 800,600 reso, your GPU isnt doing so much work and its basically slacking, in your case i think its working to about 75% on 800,600, and your cpu is doing all the work therefore you are capped by your cpu on that resolution, now. When you up the ante to 1600,1200 your GPU is now running full blast 100%, and your cpu isnt taking most of the burden, but still is 100%. Therefore 100+100 = 200 is better then, 75+100 = 175.

Yea the lower the resolution, the more CPU bound you are.

So with a P4, better to stay above 1024x768 at all times, if you have a decent GPU, which you certainly do.

I've noticed that with Source games and the 7900. My FPS have gone up almost nil. It was disheartning, but I loaded up Battlefield 2 and everything was better in meland.

A possible solution is that a game will always run better the second time you go through a particular test or area because some of that data is precached on your system. I am sorry to say this Ucinex but what you posted is completely untrue. A video card will put out as many frames per second as a game will allow it to. Their is no FPS cap on FEAR so if he was running it 800x600 the only thing capping his fps would be his CPU.

Well I'm sorry to get in this thing because I have no experience at graphics or not much anyways, but isn't what you're saying and what Ucinex is saying are the samething but just using different wording? Correct me if I'm wrong though.

The Source engine (Half Life 2, CS:Source, Vampire:Bloodlines, etc) is a CPU limited engine, so if your CPU is already the limiting factor in performance, then a graphics upgrade won't increase your FPS much, other then at higher resolutions and AA AF levels.
