TFT vs LED

Thread Starter
I am choosing a laptop that would be bought tomorrow for my Aunt. I am quite confused as w/c is better. TFT or LED?

I cant find an answer in google.

All i have learnt was that LEDs are basically LCDs that used LEDs for backlighting while typical LCDs are using CCFL backlighting.

But what the heck is TFT? All i know is that my TN Panel monitor and others that are PVA, MVA, IPS, etc are forms of TFTs.

Does this mean that LED is basically a TFT that uses LED for backlighting?

I am so confused.

As for energy savings, there is no definitive result for CCFL vs LEDs in laptop right? (or at least realistic difference).

Yes, you are correct. It is still going to be a TFT screen, the lighting is just different. Since LEDs use less power it is supposed to help save battery life.

Ah. So all LEDs are still TFTs?

So when they advertise laptops as TFTs and not LEDs (BestBuy) does it mean it's a CCFL backlighting? +1 btw

Yes it should, but you can't count on advertising to be completely true. Sometimes they make mistakes in the advertising. I think your best bet would be to get the model number and go to the manufacturers website to verify it.

This.

Advertising is mostly misleading.
Also, they tend to be lazy and label TFT LCD on everything.

At least that happens with my local electronics stores.
All laptops are labelled as TFT LCD's.

LED's are a type of TFT, with an LED backlight.

Correct

TFT means Thin Film Transister if memory serves. Totally seperate spec from LED, IPS, TN, *VA.

Correct again

LED's do suck less power. For a laptop, that's a big feature.

As for your other question, does an advertised TFT mean CCFL backlighting? No, but it means the marketing department thinks that sounds better, or bestbuy (or other) people don't know what they are selling. Odds are, it's LED, most laptops these days are.

And honestly, the backlight isn't the spec you should pay attention to too much. Battery life is far more important.

The difference between LED and CCFL will be seen most in battery life, but if I have an LED monitor on a power inefficient laptop, or tiny battery, vs a CCFL monitor on a power efficient or huge battery, then the LED laptop will still have better life.

Well, IPS, TN, and *VA are types of TFT, so it's more redundant than anything.

Yes, it basically only has to do with backlight.

LED lasts way longer than CCFL, emmits no UV (CCFL does, due to the cathodic rays), eats less than half power and it usually glows brighter with more deep black&white tonalities.
They also run colder than CCFL-based displays.
