Nope, sorry, but that's not the case. DX10 is a completely new system, not backwards compatable whatsoever (except using a slow emulation layer). Everything I've read about DX10 states that...

The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. The company decided to cut the backward compatibility with DirectX 9, 8, 7 and lower in this API but there will be a way to use games programmed for those APIs. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower.

DX10 is a much cleaned up version designed to run faster. Removes backwards compatibility with DX 9 and older. For running older games an extra layer of software will be used. May cause older games to run slower.

HOWEVER, this guy has a point:

"backwardly compatible" is a funny word. In reality, DirectX9 isn't backwardly compatible with DirectX 8. It's just so happen that DirectX 9 also ships with DirectX 8 allowing games written for DirectX 8 to work with 9. DirectX 10 will ship along with DirectX 9, just not on the same DLL. It's no big thing.

That is why Vista will use DX10. If you want to run the new OS (and you know you will have to sooner or later) you need hardware that supports DX10. Said support will be on the next generation of graphics cards. If this DX9L gets realesed it will be to ease the transition for mainstream users while they get their hardware current. Once you get your DX10 card, you will have to play older games using software emulation. Which brings up the question... if I get a DX10 card will I still be able to run WindowsXP?

This is interesting i may have to look into this new Direct X version but will it live up to its reputation and actually be worth installing.

Meclar I'm sure MS will put something out that will make DX10 cards work with XP. A lot of people I know run dual boots with different OS's so it would be silly to not release a DX10 patch or emulation for XP.

I know that it will be likely that DX10 cards will be able to run older software, on a software level that is. What I'm concerned about is that since a DX10 card will use software emulation to run DX9 possibly hindering performance, will it worth it to run WindowsXP on said card (and possibly DX10 games too) or will you be better of dishing out the extra cash to get both Vista and a new graphics card, or run Vista with DX9.0L (if it does come out). However if you still have a DX9 card running DX9.0L you won't be able to use DX10 software... I'm confussed now so I will stop typing for a bit .
