AMD64 x2 3800 vs P4 3.2?

Thread Starter
Hey guys I'm building a new computer and I wanna know what you guys would think is a better cpu for overclocking and intense gaming. And if you think the AMD 64 x2 3800 dualcore cpu is better... then do you think it would be worth it to pay 60-100 more dollars to go for the AMD 64x2 4200 dual core? Thanks.

The 3800 x2 no doubt is better. AMD right now is better then pentium for game applications. If you have the extra $100 laying around then it is just common sense to get the better one! But if you dont trust me you will not be sorry with the 3800 x2! I had a 3.2 and i made the move to amd and iam never going back.

yes, amd pwns, especially when it comes to gaming...look at the 1st line of my sig. its true. a 2.GHz AMD is just as fast as a 3.0 GHz Intel, and a Dual-Core 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon X2 3800+ is an awesome CPU, equivalent to an Intel Pentuim 4 3.6 GHz LGA775, except it is also DUAL-CORE (which is not much advantage for games) but in general they get you blistering frame rates with games with a decent GPU

If you have the time to wait then I would wait until the Crone is released...That CPU is suppose to be better then any AMD chip out right now...

CURRENTLY AMD Dual Cores are far superior to their Intel counterparts (for gaming especially)....and the AMD64 x2 4200 is not worh 60-100 more dollars over the AMD64 x2 3800. However the 4400 is worth a look because of its double level 2 cache size.....

Well right now I have a pentium D 930 3.0Ghz with 2mb L2 cache but its not really anything amazing and i've become sort of skeptical over dual core cpu's because i'm not very sure if the small increase in performance is worth the large increase in price. What about a AMD 64 4000. Anyone own one of these that has some opinion on how well it does for gaming? I have been reading about this chip and so far i think this is what i will go with.

a 3800x2's 2.0ghz clock is close or same as a P4 3.2ghz. my 3800 x2 can game fine while doing other stuff, i can even play 2 games at once too bad video card can't handle that heh

Wait for limited production at the end of the year and production increases in 2007
Time will tell.

I went from a p4 1.8(crappy, I know) to this 3800 x2 and I cannot say enough good things about this chip. Being able to do video encoding and still be able to use the computer is worth the 300 I paid for the chip IMO. In A3 and 3dmark I saw some pretty substantial increases in scores, and all of my games are much smoother. I ve got mine to 2.5ghz stable right now and I m sure I could go higher if my mobo and memory allowed it. Although, I ve noticed the OC is only good for about a 4000 point increase in A3. All on the stock hsf with as5. I would get the 3800. I also thought about spending the bit extra and getting the 4200. Trust me, you ll be more than happy with the 3800 and the extra 100 bucks. If you really want that extra bump to 2.2, this chip will handle it no problem without even breaking a sweat.
