Lapping questions

Hey all, I want to lap my Zalman 9500 and VF700. I have removed them enough times, and used 2 different thermal pastes, that I want to "start over" and lap them to give them a clean fresh surface again.

So my question is, what grit sand paper should I start with?? Here are several pics of my 9500. The surface is already flat, so I mainly just want to sand off the invisible thermal paste that is probably dried on there, and get the little tiny scratches off and give it a nice shiny surface again (hopefully more shiny than when i bought it). Please look at all the pics, any opinions are appreciated! Thanks.

Thats pretty shiny already!!
and if its already flat, then you really don't need to, since lapping is about get it flat primarily.
But if you must, I would just go with some 1500 grit paper, a couple passes. then some metal polish and it will be mirror without tiny scratches.

Remember shiny doesn't mean flat.
