Need advice on a build.

Thread Starter
I'm triyng to help my friend build a new computer.... he would like to keep it under 2k. He has been looking at 7800gt video cards, maybe a amd fx processor, a dfi motherboard with SLI, and 2gig of ram. The ram we were looking at was the ocz gold pc4000.

Does anyone have any advice on processors, single or duel? Other motherboards and cases and power supplies?

thanks all

is he going to OC at all? if so the DFI mobo is great, as you probably know. But.. I've read about problems with ocz ram, I've read a lot of bad reviews and comments about the quality of the sticks, and the performance, although I can't say myself. I was recommended, and also recommend, using G.skill, or Geil ram. But anything with the samsung chips I'm told is the best as far as compatability for the DFI mobos. I got my soprano for 80 bux at newegg, and I love it, looks nice, and stays relatively cool considering all the heat i'm generating. take a look at it. they are kinda small though, but good for cable management as you can take both sides off, and wrap the psu and peripherial cables around the back. sounds pretty good though, but I don't know enough about the different AMD procs yet to comment on that. lemme know if that helps at all. (definately would reconsider the ram, check out http://www.dfi-street.com for more info)

I actually just upgraded to the oczgold pc4000 2gig kit last month... it allowed me to take my overclock to 2.8 and my aquamark3 scores went up to 186,000..... i was VERY impressed... Now i'm always the first one into battlefield 2 maps... loading time is great, no lag, and I can run teamspeak and xfire while playing with no problems...

I don't know who gave you bad reviews on the oczgold, but the dfi-street website pointed me towards that ram, and from what I can tell they were accurate. Also since i've installed that ram, 3 of our clan members on bf2 have also went with ocz gold and the platinum and they ahve been VERY impressed also!

Maybe the person who told you the ram was crap didn't know how to set it up?

To save your friend a few bucks, I would suggest getting a lesser 3700+ and overclocking it, hopefully to fx speeds. As for the video card, go with the newer 7900 series. They are along the same price and they have better performance. DFI motherboards are a little more advanced. As a starter I would suggest an Asus or Gigabyte board. 2 gigs of ram is definitely the way to go. Games such as FEAR of BF2 require the added ram and wont require the use of page filing. For a good set of ram, try looking at G.Skill or OCZ platinums. Both are great for overclocking and wont bust your wallet in the process.
