I can't buy thigs from the net. And the three I listed are the only ones I can put my hands on. Thanks, tho. I live in Syria.

CyberDruid: The first two processors I listed are 3.0E's, but they come from different families (different CPUID's) and one of them has this "loadline A" thing. I don't know what that is. They also have different steppings. They confuse me, but now Ropey is helping lots. I think I've made up my mind.

(noticed the edit in Ropey's post)
Whoa! Man, thanks!
Are you saying that a 775-only feature is now supported on a 478 in the E0 revision? O_o

This E denotes a Prescott, I heard on this forum. But I also just saw a 2.8A prescott.

I am not sure if I can really make sense of the Intel nomenclature for their chips. I guess I got lucky with mine. Ropey knows about these things, however....

There was a move to the E(0) stepping that previously came out first in the LGA 775 variety. Since Intel did not move to downgrade CPU's by attrition, the fabs continued pushing the processors out and thus the 478 CPU's attained the E(0) stepping revision as well.

Edit: This applied to both P4 and Celeron "D" 478's.

The 2.8A (Prescott) is an "E" (Crazy Intel nomenclature) as well and is HT disabled. It has a 1MB cache and runs on a 533MHz fsb.

(Crazy Intel nomenclature) Amen. ^_^

aaaand HALT!

News!

I have made up my mind to get that SL7PM, BUT.. I just remembered.

The one I found was actually an SL8JZ. I stated that in the document, but the Intel website did not have that, but I posted the alternative SL7PM name according to THIS DOCUMENT. It states a change of names that came with a new revision, the G1. I don't know if I understand it right anymore, so any clarifications would be much appreciated. Before I make the buy, that is.

I repeat: the physical processor I can put my hands on is an SL8JZ. Check the document, and please, tell me what's going on. My mind can't put things together anymore. It's 3:20 am and I've had a very long day.

This is a revision and a different one than the E(0).

Early Intel CPUs with EM64T lacked LAHF and SAHF instructions supported by AMD64 until introduction of Pentium 4 G1 step in December 2005. LAHF and SAHF are load/store instructions for status flags of 64bit recognition.

There will be no difference for you as these EM64T instructions are disabled on your G(1) revision. You will have the best Prescott of your grouping (478) though.

This thing happens when they do not wish to create two fabs and so they kept Prescott on a single fab and just disabled the new functionality.

O_o I don't get it.

My head feels kinda hazy right now, and with all the acronyms and abbreviations, it's only getting worse.

Can it be put into plain English?
Is the SL8JZ the new G1 revision or the old E0?

It makes no difference on the 478 platform. It is the G1 but all G1 revision 64bit instructions are disabled as they were in the E0 stepping as well. The difference being is that in your CPU there are two extra 64bit instructions that are also disabled.

For you there is no difference. You are getting yourself confused for no reason.

Okay, I'm getting it tomorrow. (have to go to another city and buy it from there. I'm sad it's tray and thus has no warranty.

Thank you so much, Ropey, and everyone else.

Just noticed the title was "Please help 'he'...". Man, I sure needed to sleep last night, didn't I?
