I agree, Dawn of War is an awsome game. If you like high tech, you will love the chars and its pretty brutal. Also awsome that you can really get down and dirty and watch your chars slug it out in the middle of a big battle (Chainsaw swords and all).

Warcraft 3 was a good one too. Got me hooked with the online play. But its not modern =/

I would reccomend Dawn Of War, and see if you can get a package deal that includes the expansion pack, coz it adds some good maps, couple of more units and a new race.

Ooooh no, not even close. The first RTS is actually Dune II, back in the good old EGA graphics days. The original C&C is basically the Dune II gameplay with the motif changed from Dune to the C&C universe that Westwood invented. By the time Starcraft came out, RTS was a well established genre with many titles to choose from, including Blizzard's own Warcraft 1 & 2.

Starcraft is the BEST RTS of all time of course, but that's another statement entirely.

I can't believe this thread got this far without anyone mentioning Total Annihilation. If you havent played TA, you should give it a shot. As simple as it is it is still awesome.

I am a big SW fan, but EatW really didn't do it for me... it's OK but not great in my books. BfME II is great, but short. The warhammer40k series are a must have for carnage, modern RTS and some of the best multiplayer slaughter I have seen since... well ever. The only other fps/rts game I put up with WH40K is Battlezone... the hover tank game in our solar system. But it is a bit dated now... look at the Warhammer games... awsome.
