DHCP keeps assigning the same IP address when I need a new one, plus MAC address Q's

My girlfriend's laptop is always assigned the same IP address via DHCP. In order to get a new IP address I've tried getting a new MAC address and doing ip release/renew, but no luck.

Can anyone enlighten me on how DHCP identifies devices and assigns new IP addresses?

Our apartment building has an odd network sharing system in place. Basically 10 of us share a really fast connection. Our computers are registered via their mac addresses and allotted X GB up/down per month. Non-registered visitors are allotted 500 MB daily. This keeps us as a group under our bandwidth limit.

On weekends my girlfriend usually visits me. Only when she streams from Hulu does she have to worry about the 500mb limit. However recently I realized that our admin decided to attach her usage to my monthly allowance. I tried reasoning with him, but he wont' budge on the decision.

Outside of getting my own ISP, I was hoping I could change her mac/ip address so her computer would show up as a new machine/visitor on the network.

Have you tried statically assigning IP addresses?

Not to lecture you but isn't this kinda unethical or borderline illegal?

Unfortunately you are not able to get your IP address to change in all cases, as it is ultimately determined by your ISP's DHCP configuration (when you've got a dynamically assigned IP address, that is.)

If you have gone to cmd and tried ipconfig/release, rebooting switches and modems, I believe the only other way is to release the address through your router.

Otherwise, you are pretty much stuck with the same IP address. Also iirc the MAC address cannot be changed in most devices as it is burned into the hardware of your network device . Sort of like firmware. Although there are exceptions. Google it if you must.

Sneaky? Yes.

Illegal? I'm not sure what would be illegal about it.

Since you all are registered by MAC addresses couldn't you just install a new wireless card? You'd have to change your MAC address otherwise, which im not sure is allowed to be discussed here..either way you're going to have to tell the guy who registers your MACs if you want to get rid of the cap, so why not just get your own internet? You could get a nice wireless N router and set it up so only you and your girl can only use it.

Thanks guys, I solved it! Turned out I just had to change a value in the registry. My specific wireless card had an issue where the second value in the MAC address had to be "2", otherwise it defaulted to the normal address.
