go here and on the left menu chipsets>chipsetsoftware> I guess use the utility to determine your chipset. I'm guess n that bios and northbridge software are 2 different things. If I'm incorrect can someone set it right so I'm not giving poor advice. I know I did it on mine and Doom3 stopped crashing and CoD2 gained a hefty fps boost as well as a more vibrant look. I also did a fresh install of DX9c before that but I really attribute the improvement to the chipset software update. Oh by the by I m on 84.21 drivers.

I have yet to have a problem with my 7800gs yet. I bought it to get me by while I wait for conroe and DX10. Still working on maximum overclocks. but so far I have it at 470/1500 with no problems. I looped 3dmark03 allnight and no reboots. I have determined that my memory is at its max with no artifacting. The core seems to have more room. Temps are usually around 65c I have to run out for a moment. I have all my 3dmark scores I dont remember them off hand but it was somewhere around 14600 in 3dmark03 3000+ in 06

I am moving up from a 6800gt. But I wanted something to take to work so I could game better at work. So that was all the excuse i needed to get the 7800gs

The stock cooler
They overclock very well. It apears that alot of the companys selling them are using the reference coolers and just overclocking them to around 440 and calling that stock. From what I have read the chip will have trouble at 485 due to overvoltage protection.

You can remove it by removing the resistors circled in red below

Link to V-Rzone they have all the current volt mods on the 7800gs

I have read that this can get you up to 500mhz on it without any cooling or other voltage mods. I would consider that statement true for some. From what i have read most people start to experience artifacts around the 1500mhz mark on most of the 7800GSs.

As a general rule for video card overclocking you should always overclock your memory first to find its max. And then your GPU untill you have met the point of diminishing returns. This is the point at which you are not seeing a increase in performance for increase in clock speed. Basically you should move at 10mhz incremints and run 3dmark05 and log the scores. Either you will get to a point where your score goes down. or your system will crash. at that point you should step down your core speed and be happy

PS
Post some benchies for us please, Im quite interested in seeing what that card can do!
I have gotten a maximum 3dmark05 score of about 6750, I haven't submitted them to the ORB yet though, I will once I get it stable (for good). I installed the 83.40 drivers, FarCry still crashed the one time I tried it last night, I haven't been home at all today, and now I am going to start the download for the 83.60 drivers and go to bed so I can try them out tomorrow, hopefully I will find a winner some time soon.

Did you update the chipset on your mobo yet? I posted the link above to the intel drivers, you'll just need to determine which model is on your mobo but theres a utility there that does it too. Also I tried reinstalling CoD2 because my DX9 performance seemed slow but on DX7 I was pushing 100+ fps @ 1600x1200 with alotta goodness for the eyes on but my DX9 was at 1024x768 and smoke was dragging me down in the 20s with smokey environments. After the reinstalling I now have max textures 4x AA and anis + all the DX9 effects going @1152x864 With a solid 50FPS pinned to my set maxfps. It goes a bit higher uncapped but I prefer the cap and more continuity.
I really wanna help you with this card cause I thought I wasted my cash on it and was ready to ditch it and do a rebuild on PCI-e even though I was saving that for Vista/AM2 or Conroe, with the card being a comp stretcher till then. I know a new pci-e with a 7900GT would have beaten my rig up a bit but I'm almost convinced that the GPU is bottlenecked by my 3000+ venice and I'm not confident any overclock I could achieve without adding cash will uncork it. Now I look forward to playing cause my games went from lame to movielike quality.

I dug up the benches I made when i first started overclocking it.

3dmark06 3335 W/7800gs

3dmark05 6676 W/7800gs

3dmark03 14740 W/7800gs edit::: Made with newer overclock 491/1497

Still looking to squeeze some more out. Have not met the infamous overvoltage protector yet

The 7800gs scores are just with slight tweaking after i got it installed.

Yes I have the best (newest) drivers for my chipset, and have been experimenting with different nVidia drivers. I just ran 3dmark05 with the 83.60 drivers, HERE (6793) are the results. I was clocked at 475/1400 and my CPU was at 3.67 GHz. I bet I could break 6800 if I find better drivers and set my CPU to my maximum OC. I am going to try out some games now and see what happens.

EDIT/UPDATE: FarCry and Half-Life 2 both locked up in under 5 minutes :swearing: with the 83.60 drivers. It looked like FarCry had some strange graphical anomolies, like the gun blending in with the water, but then the screen turned black, so I don't know what it was.

Why dont you get the 84.21 or newer drivers ?

I have tried 84.21 and 84.20, I am downloading 84.25 right now. If this were a power supply issue, would the computer restart on its own or would it just freeze with the screen black and the sound looping in the background? Because right now, the screen just turns black and the sound loops and I have to restart manually. I just wanted to clear that issue up to see if I even need to bother with drivers if it is in fact a PSU problem. Thanks for the help guys.
