Small favor to ask (very low effort needed)

I am building a comp when my tax return comes and depending on how much money I'll have by then my system will range from:

A64 3200+ Venice, 1 GB ram, Geforce 6800 (pcie)
to
A64 3700+ San Diego, 1 GB ram, Geforce 7600GT (pcie)

I am planning on buying "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" asap and would like to get a rough idea on how well my system will actually play the game. This is of course a fairly crude method of doing so, however it would be nice nonetheless.

I don't plan on oc'ing anything (at least right away), and if any of you with similar specs of the above 2 setups (only main things for the game really needed) wouldn't mind, please go to http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest and let me know how far the bar went up for you past recommended. So pretty much any setup oc'ed or not that would be similar to the above setups would do just fine...even something like: A64 3500+, 1 GB ram, Geforce 6800GT would give me a great feel for what to expect.

On the homepage there is a drop-down menu with a bunch of games, it's real easy. Thanks a TON in advance, I much appreciate it.

As Oblivion is pixel shader entensive game, I'd try to find a card that has more than 12. I read that the 7600 has 12 but you should be looking for 16.

Also, those cards do have shader model 3.0 which will allow HDR lighting effects so that is cool; how much more is a 7800gt for your budget?

You could almost go the 3200 with a 7800gt or a 7900gt. Overclockability the 3200 will go a fair way but the 3700 will outperform the 3200 in both stock and overclocked ways. The 3700 is definately the pick of the 2. See how the vid card prices go when you are ready to buy. If you are tight on cash then evn try to get a 3000+, cheap and still performs well, also VERY easily overclocked past the 3200 speeds if you are worried about the 1800mhz.

that's a good point, the most important thing for a game like oblivion is the GPU and ram, the cpu is less of a factor. So maybe use the money and buy a less fast cpu and opt for a better card?

Thanks for the input, appreciate it. As far as my budget goes, the 7600gt is as extreme as i want to go price-wise, although it should be no problem. That is whether I go for a 3200+ OR a 3700+. I really don't want to go 3000+, even if that netted me a geforce 7800gt or something. I am pretty much set on the 3700+ for its great single-thread speed now and longer life (at least slightly), than the 3200+ venice.

In terms of the 7600GT, I'm fairly sure I would have to jump up past a 7800gt to see any clear gain in performance with Oblivion. I fully expect my setup to be in the mid to top end of the "high settings" category with either one. I heard in order to be on fully "max settings," you need the equivalent of a 3.8Ghz P4 (np), 1 GB ram (np), AND a geforce 7800gtx, so I wouldn't be able to play on max anyway.

Anyway, thanks again for your comments. Can't wait to play Oblivion.

Out of the two configurations you listed, why not have the best of both worlds? Get an opty 144 for $136 shipped which will have similar stock performance of the venice, but overclock nearly as well as the 3700+ (both defintiely beat out the venice in overclocked performance), this will allow you to get your 7600gt.

Thanks, but I am pretty sold on what I want to get spec-wise. The reason for this post was to see if one or more people could possibly test their computers on that site. (providing their computer is around same specs I plan on having or even less...insane system tests won't really tell me anything.)

Thanks again.

Their stock coolers will get you to about 2500 MHZ with either the 3200+ or the 3700+
Keep checking on prices, RAM for example has been getting some great discounts at newegg lately.
