Okay, $50 more. The 7900GT is still the much better buy.

The real question should be x1900xtx 512mb or 7900gtx 512, that's where performance becomes comparable, in stock guise the 2 cards perform almost identically.. both whoop the x1800xt's butt, you have to consider that even the 7800gtx is a little faster than the x1800!!, so basically.. if you feel like spending $500 then go nv but if you feel like spending $650 then get the x1900xtx, the one thing that the ati is better at now is video decoding but all else is even.

Good luck with your purchase.

We're talking $300 price range, not $500. And the X1900XTX is down to about $550.

The 7800GTX is in the $450 range, and the 7900GT performs better, and costs about $300.

7900gtx/gt beats x1900xt+xtx Here is your proof. BAM!

The 7900GT is a great performer and its at a great price, but if you're looking for more performance and you don't mind shopping alternate sources (ebay and such) then you can find a brand new gtx in box for about $330-$350, as a matter of fact one of my friends just got one for about $320 on ebay.. new in box.. the owner got it and a couple of days later got a 7900gtx for his bday.. go figure. you can go with the 7900gt or with a little shopping you can land a 7800 gtx.. and the gtx will open up a whole new world of overclocking for you. Rejectcase just got one that way. The x1900xtx and the 7900gtx are even but the 7900gtx wins in my view because of the price dirfference.

in all honesty i would have went to the 7900gtx but ive already got the first 7800gtx and i like it - (i got the other from ebay with NV5 silencer rev3 for 320.00 cause it was used for a whole wapping 3weeks for benchmarking pretty much. sides the 7900gtx is a better buy because its the 7900gtx beefed with a better heat disipation- the operating temp for the 7900gtx is around the same as the 6800 (not GT) and the 7800 gtx with stock cooler is aroun 75c on full game - (TOO MUCH HEAT IN THE CASE). But the reason its so cheap is cause its built from the 7800GTX architechure and made slightly diff with more transistors and slightly diff die size MAINLY for heat - which yields a higher Clock capability which yields to better performance- and cause its not built from scratch its more cost effiecient for the companies to manufacture - which yields to a happy me and you.
