Opteron or Athlon X2

Thread Starter
I know that the Opterons tend to oc better however what actually performs better...I am looking between a Opty 165-175(have not decided which one yet)...Or a Athlon X2 3800+ - 4400+ (have not decided which one yet)

They are on adverage around the same prices but not sure which actually performs better...HELP...
Thanks in advance

Opty 165 and OC it to 3 gigs (or more). I suppose there are lots of people on this forum that have this CPU and know it and what are its possibilities. If you want to stay stock I suppose the x2 4400 is the best option.

All else being the same, Optys will perform better. They are built to stricter requirements useing more pure silicon. A non O/C dual core opty will beat a non O/C X2 of equal speed.

Why do people keep making comments like this? Where is your source for this information. I've heard X2's have gold memory controllers that make them faster. Fact: optys have slightly more relaxed memory controllers than their athlon counterparts, thus clock for clock their performance will not be faster, however it may allow for slightly better stability (obviously the purpose being for their intended server use).

Don't expect any amd dual core but an fx60 to hit 3ghz w/o ridiculous cooling...

But back to the original post, the opty 165 or the opty 170 (because of the 10X multi) are the best dual cores to buy (under the fx60 of course). Most reach 2.6-2.7 and some go higher, along with the 2 X 1mb L2 cache, there's no need in paying any more for another amd dual core (except fx60) being they won't oc any higher than those two chips. Plus, the opty won't need as much vcore in the process, thus you don't have to worry about the vcore limit of a lot of motherboards.

Yeah, opterons memory controllers aren't made for that kinda speed, they are server cpu's. They are made for stability and reliability, not 3 ghz.

The x2 4400+ anyday over the opteron.

I saw a review were the opty beat an equivlent Athlon 64 in everything includeing gameing. I was looking for the review to post, but I was in the middle of work, so I didnt have time. I found some were a singe dual core 2xx opty beat an X2 but I didnt think that was a fair compairson. So I will try to find the one with the 1xx series opty.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...teron-165.html heres one review. Not a very fair one granted. Opty 165 vs. Athlon 64 3800+

Yep, the extra cache makes a difference.

The toledo cores should be equivalent to their opty counterparts, i.e. 4400 = 175, and the 4800 = 180, the manchester cores (3800, 4200, 4600) have 2X 512kb L2 cache as opposed to the 2 X 1mb L2 cache of the toledo and opty, so, they are not equal in performance per clock as the toledos and optys.

The 4400+ Toledo and the 175 Opty Denmark utilze the same cache of 2x1024 and operate @ default 11x200.
All the Denmarks have 2x1024 where as the only the 4400+ and 4800+ Toledo have 2x1024, the 3800+, 4200+ and 4600+ of that core have 2x512.
The Manchester 2x core series... 3800+, 4200+ 4600+ have 2x1024
