Help Build a Computer

Thread Starter
I need some help building a computer. my budget is $900-1000. I'm considering buying a AMD Athlon X2 3800+ or Opteron that is equivalent for overclocking. I don't know what motherboard or RAM is good for overclocking. Could you maybe help me come up with some specs for the computer?

Thank you.

G'day mate and Welsome to the forum, first of all fill out ya system specs (if you have a rig) at the top of the page under "user cp" then we can move on.
DFI is a very good brand of motherboards, it is an enthusiast board and is a very good overclocker. That would be a good start to build on.

Well I haven't started building a computer. I actually never built or overclocked a computer before, but I am fairly good at fixing computers so I thought I build a computer myself. Anyways, I need some suggestions on what motherboard, RAM and other things necessary components in the computer to make the processor to overclock.

- I want to use X2 3800+ or Opteron (not sure which is better)
- motherboard with x16 SLI support
- at least 2GB of RAM to start with...
- a good case with good air circulation at a decent price
- decent power supply
- maybe a good heatsink/fan for the processor
- and anything else I may have missed

any suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you.

Here's my suggestions, you can change anything you want.

Athlon 3700+ San Diego - $212
DFI LanParty Ultra-D - $123
G.Skill Extreme DDR500 - $165 (also a $18 rebate)
eVGA 7600GT - $190
Sunbeam NUUO 550W - $78
Thermaltake Big Typhoon - $55
Artic Silver 5 - $7

Plus HDD, Optical drives, case, input devices, etc.

Go for the 7900gt, dfi lan party ultra mobo, Atlon 3700+ or 4400+. For the case i'd go with the antec p180 or the thermaltake kandalf of w/e thats called. Hdd, i'd go for a 200gb wd, or two raptor set up in raid.

Thanks for the fast replies!! That was really fast. anyways, I'm actually wanting to use Dual-Core processors... so is X2 better or Opteron?

Also this may sound really stupid but what is Raid and whats the difference between Raid0 and Raid1?

Thank you

Opterons are used for Servers mainly...but ofcourse with a little tweakage...it can become a Workstation !
The difference between the two raid setups is mirroring and striping...
Mirroring a drive is simply reproducing the same data on another drive exactly as it is on another...
Striping writes data to both (or more) drives to improve performance in the transfer of data

can you wait until conroe?

if not get a 3800 or higher,
id definatkey get dual core, becuase games and programs are steadaly getting coded for them,
opterons are good, but many people get the x2s for gaming

can you mirror a striping array?

This is probably gonna be your best setup for a great price. Replace the 3700 with the 3800x2 if you like. You could probably save some money in a few places by going with

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103937
-Rock solid PSU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138270

-Cheaper boards, less hype

factor in 40 for dvd/rw drive, 50-100 for good HD and the kandalf os going to be exp so kust search around new egg till you find one you really like.

GL, keep us posted
