Brass Bottom Boys - Page 1071

I am building a cheap folding rig here by tomorrow or the next day. After that, my main computer will only be folding on the CPU. The GPU most likely wont be touched.

Yummy, now all we have to do is get rid of @hertz9753 for his poor folding efforts. Third person posts are allowed for hertz9753. wink.gif

Why haven't you added the Brass Bottom Boys as your team to your community profile for approval? When I click on your username and see your picture I think @DarthBaggins younger brother every time. It's silly but true and disrespect was meant.

Also @lanofsong is getting a paddling in the GPU-L category after @makr made some flag adjustments. His GPU was facing south and he was sitting on it but he learned to use a compass.

All jokes aside this is looking like great month for the Brass Bottom Boys. thumb.gif

This stings as I am not sure what else to do - If i push my card anymore and I get errors.  Looks like @makr and his GTX980 will be promoted to GPU-O next month :yessir: Awesome point production.

Just got back from my Spring Break to Boston and noticed I had a new sauna where my TC folder was folding. Since the power limit was bypassed (painted resistor), it's been bumping the thermal limit, pegging at 80 C even with the room AC cranked (room ambient ~85+ F). This can't last. I may need to adjust the temp threshold down just a hair so I don't end up with very expensive toast.

I'm not sure how you do it, lanofsong, but whatever it is that also keeps it stable, yours is the more impressive feat.

@CptAsian what is the core clock on your FuryX? I took mine up to 1119 today and it seems stable but Afterburner will not let me OC the memory and even if I could I don't think I would raise it.

I'm not good at AMD GPU's so maybe I will just keep pushing it until it fails a WU. I will say that the Sapphire Nitro has one of the best air coolers that I have ever used. It doesn't go above 50C @ 69% fan speed.

I almost forgot to add that my internet has not been working right for over a week. The Centurylink people tell it's working fine. thumb.gif

Right now, my second Fury is in my gaming rig (temporarily), but I normally run both at 1110 MHz with +96 mV in Afterburner. When the room gets too hot, I'll undervolt back to stock clocks, so 1050 MHz at -96 mV. I haven't touched the memory. I overclocked them when I got them and just ran Firestrike until they didn't crash. I think the highest I got was 1150, but they kept failing WUs until I hit 1110.

But yes, the cooler is fantastic. The heat/noise ratio is fantastic, considering how much power they're eating up. Maybe it's exaggerated from my perspective since I'm used to a dual-GPU card, but it's still impressive.

Numbers might suffer for a day or two. Just got my dedicated folding rig up and running. Had to turn off my main one to remove 2 GPUs to transfer to it.

If it helps, my Fury (s) won't even do 1100mhz without a voltage boost (+35). Stock clocks on the Nitro are 1050mhz...

My cards top out at 1125mhz and that takes a sizable voltage boost and adds a LOT of heat, and thus, noise. They will be fine in games at 1125/550mhz but run much hotter.

My HBM memory was stable in games and benches at 550mhz, however, with ANY memory OC I would fail work units eventually in f@h. Generally pretty quickly.

I could probably help you overclock more if you had literally any other AMD card (except Polaris, I've never overclocked those). Imo the Fury's just aren't meant to be overclocked. I mean, you can, but you'll get maybe 5% more performance but a ton more heat and noise. It just doesn't seem worth it to me so I generally leave mine at stock. I use Crossfire, of course, so for the games that support it I don't really need to overclock anyway as two of these cards are still very powerful. About the only advice I can really give if you insist on overclocking (it's the team comp after all) is to just add more voltage, increase fan speeds to compensate. But don't expect more than 100mhz on the core.

The cooler is amazing. Especially when coupled with the "Power Efficiency/Radeon Chill" mode in the newer AMD drivers. I have my fan profile set to 100% fan at 70C but it never reaches that. In a lot of games (Tomb Raider 2013 and ROTTR), my top card doesn't pass 45C and bottom stays at 40C while pushing 60fps Ultra in Eyefinity. In other games that have problems with power efficiency mode, Top card stays around 58C and bottom at 50C (Dragon Age Inquistion, Witcher 3). In those I get screen tearing or stuttering with Power Efficiency on so I have to turn it off.

I've had 7970 Vapor-X, R9 290 Tri-X, R9 290 Vapor-X, 380X Nitro, all in Crossfire at some point with matching cards. I thought the R9 290 Vapor-X was the pinnacle of air coolers, those were fantastic cards, but the temps and noise level of the Fury Nitro is somehow even better, with the cards and cooler being noticeably smaller. I don't know how they do it. I'm not sure about the air coolers on newer generation Nvidia cards, but I think Sapphire has some of the best custom air coolers on the market. At least, they definitely have the best coolers if you're only talking about AMD.

Looks like a combined PPD output will be 1.1mil. Its sad that putting the 670 and 970 by themselves in this rig only nets up to 500-550k. I am currently averaging 450-500k.

It also could be that I have them both set to client-type advanced and they cant really do them.
