Brass Bottom Boys - Page 186

The 2600k actually runs cooler than the 970. It will actually reach 5.0 GHz at moderately low voltage. I'm planning on getting either a H60 or H70 to cool whatever CPU I get. I have been looking into a third option. Buying everything but my CPU and just saving that money for a LGA 2011 CPU and motherboard. The reason is because the current sandy Bridge GPU's are Intel's Midrange offering. The LGA2011 is the high end enthusiast level CPU's. If I wait it out and save the money and just add a bunch to it until it comes and then buy that. The LGA2011 CPU's will come in 4,6, and, 8 core options so if I got a 8 core CPU with hyper-threading would get like 12 minute (or less) TPF on a -bigadv Wu. That would be over 100k ppd lol.

Well, on that note, I say wait. If the new sockets are that close, then I wouldn't see a reason to buy in now and have outdate/last years biggest thing in a few months. Your rig now is working, perhaps not at the rate you'd like it to, but it works. If you wait on the new stuff then you can be fairly future proof. At least moreso than you would be buying now. But all that's assuming that the new socket is released somewhat timely (I'm so behind on tech news. I'm still rocking 775, LOL).

RE GPU: I've decided to hold off on upgrading GPUs for now. I have some things I need/want to buy for my HTPC, and I just can't justify buying a GPU that only benefits my PPD when my HTPC benefits me and my wife. Goes back to what I just said I suppose, my current GPU works fine, just not as much as I'd like it to, lol.

Yeah I can understand that. By holding off I also allow myself to get more/better items now. I also push back my home server/htpc/dedicated folding rig build but I also extend the time that I am on this team lol. I could always use my old AMD Athlon 64 X 2 5200+, motherboard and RAM from my old HP I have and just buy a new case, psu, HDD's (i plan on getting 3-5 2TB AS Caviar Green HDD's and then either get a new 240GB Intel SSD for my current "Gaming" Rig and use the 120 GB C300 I have now in my HTPC (which wouldn't be really beneficial as my bottleneck would be my CPU of course lol) or use it as a second storage in my main rig. I would use it to store my "second level of games" (the ones that I don't really play that much but honestly that would be all my games since I have played a total of maybe 20 hours of games on this gaming rig since I built it because of folding lol) and a "cheap" GPU (which my idea of a cheap gpu is a eVGA GTX 560 ti lol. I won't buy a gpu that I can't fold on anymore, even if the one I buy is overkill for the system I'm putting it in.). Let me know if you need some help with your HTPC setup drop. I have done quite a bit of research into the matter. I will be using mine for all of my media (music, videos (both home videos and actual movies both digital copies and converted DVD's and Bluray's) and have several hardware and software choices (both paid and free software though the paid usually has the edge whether its an easier GUI or more options that are actually needed and useful) picked out. You still have my number I imagine (though you've never used it lol)?

I guess if I hold off on the CPU/cooler combo now then ill be able to buy 2 eVGA GTX 480 SC's (instead of just 1), my 1200w Corsair AX1200 (hopefully its enough to power 3 x GTX 480's in SLI), my sound card I want, and the 3D monitor w/ 3D vision kit that I want (Acer just came out with a 27" LED monitor w/ the 3D bundle for $699 but I'll probably just get the Asus or Acer 24" one for $500 with the kit)) instead of settling for the Samsung or Asus 23" non 3D monitor. Or I could just stick to what I was just going to get with the CPU and put the difference in savings and add to it along the way with money I get for fixing/building computers. Please guys, I enjoy your input on these matters as it helps to give me perspective.

If it were me, I would limit myself to one big upgrade and then put the rest of the cash into savings for the future-socket build. Though, if you get new GPUs now, you'll just end up kicking yourself for it later because by the time you get a new rig together the 400series will be old news.

In all honesty, you could probably part together a whole other rig for gaming from the FS section here. Middle line CPU, cheap cooler, PSU, board + ram, and a GPU (the ATIs are great gaming cards and can be had for cheap). That might help you in the long run by fending off the upgrade-cravings on your current rig. Then you could keep that rig folding and have a gaming rig. All the while having new toys to play with until the new-socket-toys come out. That's my .02 sir. And yea, I still have your number in my inbox somewhere if I need it.

RE: HTPC - I have it all assembled and going. Most of my build/research is done. I need a case and a PSU (using a loaner right now) and that's all. Going to pick up a small keyboard/trackpad for it too. I've been eying the RII on Amazon.

Cait, I find myself in need of your assistance. I need some help setting up my i7-930 to fold -bigadv using VMWare and Ubuntu 10.10 64bit within my Windows 7 64 setup. Do you think you could hop on vent and walk me through it sometime? I would really like another 5-10k ppd and I'm sure the teN could handle me getting 80-85k Wu drops. I'll keep at it until I hear back from you but I'm not optimistic and I want to make sure I do it right so I get the most ppd. How is your chugging along? Any 100k Wu's yet?

@Repo, I am just going to buy a second 480, a 560 ti (physx/folding), a monitor or 2 (lol), a kick a$$ sound card (i need suggestions for a good one and for my other parts too), my Corsair AX1200 PSU,a 3tb hdd, and my wifes laptop ( I feel like I'm missing a couple of things I'm gonna get in that list but ill update it later lol). Then I'll toss what's leftover into savings and add to the savings every cent I make from my computer stuff ( I average between $1000-$5000 per month) and then when the octocore extreme edition sandy bridge clue come out in Q4 this year I'm gonna buy one, the top of the line motherboard, the top of the line RAM kit, and whatever is the latest and greatest SSD of the time. I should have enough saved by then to get a couple of the high end GPU's too. Then I could put these 480's and 560 to into the home server and just fold 24/7/365 on it. That should net me hopefully over 300,000 ppd by then. Id be a unstoppable force by then huh lol. Hell, with the potential to make $5k per month of savings, if eVGA made a dual socket board ( like the SR2) then I might even be able to get one of those and push close to 500,000 ppd. I'm hoping that my computer work stays steady and lucrative but ill prepare for the worst just in case. At the very least, ill be able to get one of these current sandy bridge CPU setups for less around then. We'll have to wait and see I guess huh? Good luck everyone with the rest of this month (maybe if I wish you guys good luck then it'll rub off on me because you all know that if it wasn't for bad luck then I'd have no luck at all (or at least that was the way it was before, things seem to be going ok for now... knock on wood). Good night and I hope to hear from you soon Cait. Please pm me because ill get it instantly on my phone. Otherwise it might take me a day or so to realize you replied to me about it.

I made a list of the parts I'm planning on getting and ill post it here later. Be forewarned, I'll be double posting because this post is way to long to be adding to lol.
