Best Way to fully remove drivers?

Thread Starter
Right my 5850 has been sold and i am now running on built in graphics from the mobo until my new card (Asus GTX 470) gets here tomorrow, what is the best way to remove the 5850 drivers to make sure that i dont get any issues when i install my GTX 470

I am downloading Driver Sweeper but want to check is that okay to use, i have heard people say that its not the best way to do it and that it can cause problems and such so i just want to make sure that everything is okay using Driver Sweeper

Well despite being logged in as an Admin, clicking run as admin and setting run as admin in the properties Driver Cleaner wont install it keeps saying despite the above! that i need to be logged in as admin???

You first want to uninstall the drivers via device manager. To do this (for vista/win7) just type Device manager in the start menu search. Then expand the Display adapters section, right click on the graphics driver and choose uninstall. Make sure to check the box that says delete the driver software for this device.

After you are done there you can use Driver sweeper... it is safest to use when booted into safe mode.

What I always do is uninstall the drivers via the Programs and Features CP. Then I reboot into safe mode and run Driver Sweeper. Then I reboot normally back to Windows and run CCleaner to clean the registry. Then I install new drivers.

When I changed my dad's video card, from nVidia to ATI, I did that exact same process and it worked flawlessly.

All you have to do is go into your device manager and it should be under video options or something like that. Then when you click on it a new window will pop up that will show up an option that says uninstall drivers. After that reboot into safe mode and run driver sweeper and delete any remaining stuff that has to do with ATI. After you "clean" it will ask to reboot, click yes and then boot up normally. Then just install your new drivers and you're done.

I just did this the other day

1. uninstall ati drivers from add/remove programs
2. boot into safe mode
3. run dirversweeper and remove everything ati. Keep running it a few times until nothing ati appears anymore
4. shut down pc, remove 5850, install 470, boot into windows and install nvidia drivers

done

You don't need to install driver sweeper if you download the binaries (not the one with installer, if it doesnt work).
Just unpack it and run.
