None of them are shrink-wrapped because they want customers to be able to open that Velcro-sealed flap inside the store. It's all a part of the presentation and MSI's sales pitch/tactic.

Well it's been awhile since I last posted about my card's condition. After a couple of stressful weeks I decided not to RMA my card because I'm 100% sure it wasn't the video card that was giving me "artifacts". In fact, it seems there weren't any artifacts in the first place, as all the games I'm playing now are completely fine. The games I've tried are Stalker CoP/CS, Crysis and Warhead, Bioshock 1 and 2, Metro 2033, DOW 2, and Starcraft 2. I tested my 5770, which gave the same results (the artifacts I saw were just settings that needed to be adjust properly in the games themselves).

So I guess that's it then. This card hasn't been giving me any trouble for almost a week now and I'm very happy with it. I'm in the process of getting a decent overclock; the settings are 800/1600/1810 at 1050mV. I ran MSI Kombustor (1920x1080, Post FX, 16xMSAA, OpenGL3) for around 1hr 40min and Furmark for about 45min (I was impatient) with no visible artifacts in either test and in games. Max temp was 78C at 54% fan speed in a 79F room. Should I consider this stable, and if not, what should I change? For example, is my voltage too low for this clock?

I'm quite happy with the results but I will reflash using OVEVGA480.ROM and will run the same stress test.

Just one question about those artifacts during stress test, does it matter even if it reported none after testing?

Just got my SLI bridge replacement from MSI (thanks Rajiv!!). Did a 3dmark Vantage run at 800/1900@1.088v and got 33.8k. Previously I was getting 31k without the bridge, so it's a little less than 10% improvement

BIOS performance is totally placebo. Just find one you like that meets your needs (uncapped, clocks, and if the defaulting voltage has been tweaked)
