There's no way to guarantee it. But, as I showed you above, you can check it prior to putting it in your system (after you receive it).

Yeah man i really appreciate your help , the only downside at least for my is that i do not live in the US , i go there often and have a house in miami , but in there i have no system to try it.

So i guess i have play it safe and wait a couple days until we hear from someone that these new batches unlock.

When I posted 5½ hours ago, there were 10 left. Now there are 8. They're going to sell out before you even order.

Even if somebody orders one and finds it to accept a GTX 470 BIOS (to "unlock"), then it still won't guarantee that all 8 of these are GTX 470's binned as GTX 465s (or, "unlockable"). This is just a risk that any buyer has to take.

Even I took a risk when I purchased mine a month ago (I think everyone who bought one took a risk).

I think that you have to be the one who decides whether or not it's worth the risk.

Edit: When Metonymy posted (exactly 23 hours ago), there were 14 in stock: http://www.overclock.net/10628119-post3462.html

I still think $280 isn't the best bang for buck even though I really want this card now. I'm really hoping they lower the price on it before they're all gone but I'm not holding my breath w/ only 7 left.

On another note the non GE version is only $175 AR. Everything I read about it says it's a good card and it OC's very well.

Thinking about jumping on it to save the $100+? What do you guys think?

1. when thinking of price you have to look at it like your buying a 470. which makes this a great deal with a copper cooler to boot. if it won't unlock ie stable then send it back.

2. don't buy a 465 unless you can unlock it. 460 will be better that a 465

3. rebates suck! lol

Also I am a firm believer that all of these GE cards have 10 mem chips. MSI knows what they are doing, that's why this is a limited edition and has a copper cooler. Ask your self why did they not make it a 470 or 480 with copper? hmm. A while back when people first started to unlock cores on AMD chips MSI specifically marketed a series of motherboards that could unlock the cores. that was there marketing campaign. So come on they know what they are doing. Its just a matter if you can get your card stable or not.

If anyone has a GE with only 8 mem chips than prove me wrong (pics) until then this is my stance!

[EDIT] just because something has the potential does not mean it is guaranteed to unlock

Over the past few weeks, we have discovered in this thread that there are several GTX 465 Golden Editions that are known to not work with a GTX 470 BIOS (they won't "unlock"). A few were discovered by people in this thread, but the majority seem to be being sold by NCIX in Canada who are specifically advertising that they can not be turned into GTX 470s (at least according to Linus who tried to "unlock" them).

So being a firm believer in something doesn't always mean that it's true. In this case, it's not true: the majority of these cards are indeed GTX 470s binned as GTX 465s, but there are some that are not.

successfully unlocking is one thing but did they have 8 or 10 mem chips.

Even if a card has 10, it doesn't guarantee that the GPU on the PCB is a GTX 470 (meaning, one that will "unlock"). That's why some of these will not "unlock": they are GTX 465s binned as GTX 465s, not GTX 470s binned as GTX 465s.

So, it isn't 100% dependent on whether or not there are 10 memory chips.

I find that odd that they would put the extra ram with a chip that couldn't utilize it, so did they just not unlock or was it actually discovered that they were GF100-030-A3 chips instead of GF100-275-A3 chips? If there is proof I'd like to see it. I have never stated that all cards are unlock-able I just believe that all GE cards have the potential!
