Weeelll ... it'd be more accurate to say the core and shaders do all the math. The memory is where that math is applied to create the picture that you see (that's why the memory is often referred to as the frame buffer). Also certain effects (like transparency AA) sorta happen after the picture has been constructed in the memory.

The clocks in both places work together, but the scaling that's seen from a core/shader bump definitely tends to larger on a % basis vs. memory. But it's definitely best to OC both as far as possible, because they both help each other out. Esp. when transparency AA is involved, cause extra memory bandwidth definitely helps its (and certain other post-processing effects) performance.

newegg has 1 opened box left for $212 shipped.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814127514R

Couldn't help myself and I ordered 2. I don't think I'll have much luck either unlocking them or oc'ing them but what the hell.

I might finally be a club member.

If one of them is #1882 then it's definitely unlockable.

#1774 is on it's way to newegg. So, if anyone gets it, it does unlock and OC's nicely. Just wouldn't do 850 core with "MSI safe" voltage like my others can.

I only plan on keeping 1 card so we'll see next week if I have any luck? Wouldn't surprise me at all if these open box GE have the boards replaced with non GE, I have to admit the thought crossed my mind.

Has anyone here had any luck with an "open box" GE from newegg?

These stock fans are really starting to $*&(%* me off with them slowing down when ever they want to. Something in windows has to be corrupting afterburner. Even the cards sped will go back to stock but afterburner is still showing oc clocks.

This same scenario happened to me before and I had to change the power management settings from NVIDIA Control Panel->Manage 3D settings->Power management mode and select Prefer maximum performance.

That resolved everything.

I'll give it a try. Does the gpu still throttle down when not in use?

It still does but it will maximize up as needed unlike before after finishing up 1 WU in folding, it goes to 50% core/shader/memory and will stay there that I had to reboot the box in order to get the OC clock.
