I was using Linux mint, but as with my intergrated 8200 series it was not playing all HD content smooth with the 465 GE, so I got ready to run the gauntlet of systems to find the right one, but was very happy when the first one I tried improved the video playback to perfection. The system is Linux Mephis. Overall I am very satisfied now, but I know this card has much more to offer even without unlocking the 470 within. So this brings me to my questions.

A) anyone out there running this card on a Linux system, if so which one?

B) is there anyway to flash the card to a 470 in Linux?

C) is there anyway to OC the card without hurting my brain. I love linux, but I have EXTREME ADD, the real kind, so it can be very very very difficult for me at times. I am very slowly learning, and can follow directions so long as very regular language is used to explain the linux language. IE assume I know nothing about Linux, cause I really know very little. Just enough to love it.

D) I want to make love to this GPU, is that normal?
A) I ran it with ubuntu before

B) I've not tried this, but a quick google search turned up this: NVflash for linux After you get nvflash to run, unlocking would be the same

C) The only way I can think to OC in linux would be to flash an OC'd firmware, that should work. You may be able to run afterburner with wine, but I doubt it.

D) Yes, completely, just don't break the fans when you do, like I did.

Flashing is done while booted to a USB flash drive, so the OS you are using shouln't matter.

That is true, so long as he can create USB drive. It may be tricky in linux, I've never tried it.

Congrats ... that's one hell of a deal on one of these cards. Had my SLI set for a year now, and I still find myself eye-balling 'em lovingly through the side window. I love on my cards even more when I take 'em out for cleaning, gently cradling one in my hand. They are just such ... BEEFY cards ... so heavy and solid-feeling ... plus they're so very shiny and beautiful to gaze upon

If you're running Linux you probably should just OC the card at the same time as you do the bios flash to GTX470. Basically once you learn how to flash the bios, you've learned 90% of what you need to know to be able to adjust clocks via editing the bios. You just have to change like 6 numbers in a grid of a bunch of numbers in the NiBiTor bios editor, save the bios file, and flash it to the card. I believe there's instructions at the top of this thread for the bios flash, and I can tell ya what numbers to change in NiBiTor to adjust clocks.

The trick is going to be determining what's stable before you flash ... unless you don't mind doing the flash a whole bunch of times just to try different clock/voltage combo's. Any chance you could throw it in a Windows box for a day so you can just use Afterburner to determine stable volts/clocks prior to doing the flash?

Ok, I was wondering if it was just a pre operating system flash. For some reason I thought you had to be in afterburner to do it. So on that note, I should be able to do it, and also can tell the other poster that UNetbooting, or Disk Utility, or a combo of the two makes for very easy makin of Bootable USB drives in Linux. It can be done in under 30 seconds if you've done it several times. I use it for checking out new sytems, and on that note I found in both Zorin, and Ultimate Gamers Linux distros I can actually download Afterburner and Combuster quite easily, Combuster loads up fine, but when I tried the burn in, it seemed it was going at a snails pace, but I have no prior experience, so I cannot be sure. Unfortunately Afterburner tried, but failed to load. Maybe just a tweek needed, but that is where my head starts throbin. I really need to sit down and start watching Linux tutorials from page one soon. I can learn anything if it is explained clearly, and without assumptions of techical knowledge on my part I do have some various Windows distros, but can't get them to load from the USB, and my sister in law has my DVD drive for the time being.

Oh, and as for the number 1 card, I will go out on a limb and say it is probbaly in some little display case in some MSI excecutives office or closet. Mine is
0778, I was keeping my fingers crossed for a 000_ _ number, but hey I will take this one.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, oh and LOL at the broken fans !!

That is his signature. He's one of the many forum moderators on this message board.

That line in his signature means that we are not allowed to enforce the rules on others (the Terms of Service / Forum Rules). Instead, we are only allowed to report the post. So that means if I see someone disobeying the rules either intentionally or unintentionally, then the only thing I'm allowed to do is report it. It means I'm not allowed to acknowledge it in any post I make (that is, if I post anything at all).

Furthermore, I really shouldn't click the Quote button on that person's post because it duplicates the post. If I quoted a post that has text in it that breaks the rules, then that creates more work for the moderators.

To report a post, just click this button on the offending post:
