You could take the shroud and fans off and mount two 60mm fans are a single 120mm fan. Zip ties are ghetto but they work.

So is everyone still liking their cards? I think I'm not going to upgrade for another year. I went full water cooled and I don't feel like doing another water setup any time soon.

Hi again, so I am running my card on Windows XP for a little experimentation (Was on Linux for those who don't remember me). So I got the latest afterburner, and combuster and after watching a youtube video starting playing around a bit. I have not touched the Core Voltage, and I seem to have a stable OC with

Core Clock 800 (can inch up to about 815 before artifacts)
Shader Clock 1600 (automatically slides with the Core, is is possible to unlink?)
Memory Clock.. hesitant to play with but it seemed stable at 1700.

So now, keeping in mind I am a total noob to OC GPU's, How do these numbers look, and should I mess with the Core Voltage. I am not ready to unlock it yet as I need to wait till payday for thermal paste (yes I am that poor)

I wanted to mention the previous owner claimed he never OCed this unit, but did use it in a sli setup. I am slightly concerned since during two short OC sessions (less than 2 mins before turning it back down to stock) I smelled an almost perfume smell. I am hoping this is simply because it truly has never been OCd and some vapor for a basically new card is escaping, but I am also concerned it could be getting too hot. The Afterburner Temp monitor has not yet showed it reaching 70, usually peaking at 67. The combustor GPU temp reader seems to be broken, as it stays at 40c. I am using an old version of Kombustor though simply because it is prettier.

So what am I doing right/wrong?

Lay it on me.

800 is a nice OC for a gtx 470, some cards can go higher, and others can't even hit 800.
[edit] I now see you're using this as a gtx 465 still, that's still a fine OC, but I never bothered to OC as a gtx465 with any of mine, so I can't say how good it is.

70C is fine for one of these cards. With the reference cooler they typically get up to ~85-90C+, max temp is 105C, although I would never want a card to get that hot.

You don't really need new TIM to unlock the card, some people have actually gotten worse temps after applying new TIM, so ymmv. I would say where your temps are now, you should be fine.

Let us know how you make out.

thanks for the prompt reply anubis1127,

The reason for the thermal grease is just cause I want to make absolute sure this is the 10 chip model before trying to unlock it. Just in case someone did something weird like put a GE cooler on a regular 465. Not at all expecting this. Original box, original sticker. I kinda felt 815mhz was a high OC for the stock 465, so maybe I got a good one? I plan to get OCZ thermal paste if I can find it in Japan, if not I will settle for artic silver and double the price. Whether you like OCZ or not their thermal paste actually is the best without going to diamond.

Questions..

1) has anyone ever come across a GE with only 8 chips?

2) Is there any benefit to overvolting this?

3) anyone know some FREE quality road games to test this out on, or FPS? Or just something with intense but pretty graphics that will make use of this card?

4) anyone want to send me some OCZ paste? X D

OK, still locked as a 465, and I am becoming braver or stupider.

I have achieved

800 core clock
1600 shader
1889 memory

The memory seems to raise my temp by 1 degree at the most, so I am fearful that the sensor is wrong, but I am seeing absolutely no artifacts, does memory increased create artifacts if pushed too far, or just heat up my card? I know it's a noob question, but I am not far from maxing out the memory slider and only held back by fear at this moment. I don't want to do something stupid with my minimal understanding, but it seems I can keep going with the memory.

Don't worry about TIM. I'm running @850 unlocked and temps rarely ever go above 65.

1) I haven't heard of any.

2) You may need to increase the voltage to get your OC stable, if by overvolting you meant going over the allowed 1.087v, that's typically only needed for extreme OC's. Most people that go over 1.087v are usually using water/subzero cooling though.

3) A good stability test is OCCT, run with the error check option, for 20-30 min. I did that on the 4 cards I have owned at one point, found a stability point, then thrown every DX11 game I own at it with no problems.

4) I don't have any, but I do have some EVGA frostbite, which is pretty much the same thing, from what I heard, and it's crap. Much worse than the stock TIM. My temps aren't horrible, I tried reseating/reapplying TIM a second time with same results. I thought the TIM spread looked good the first time, not nearly as sloppy as the factory job, but still performed worse than the factory job.

Well UPS delivered few hours ago (9:00pm) received card #1377 as replacement for card #1698 (RIP ). This morning when i arrive from work i will run test with this new card to be sure that its at least stable as a 465 and if it will unlock to a 470 so i can SLI it with #1692.

I just meant increasing the voltage by unlocking the voltage control in Afterburner. I still haven't done this. I did find the ceiling for my memory clock, though it seemed way too high as it was really almost maxed in afterburner. Never saw any artifacts, and then it froze. Scared me, but I shut down in less than 2 seconds, and all seems fine. Still scary Sh^&!

As for the OCZ paste, unless they changed the forumula since 2 years ago, that stuff is golden. I saw a huge drop from stock paste on a stock AMD cooler. Bought the Samurai cooler here in Japan and had to use the stock paste for that. I suspect that paste is the reason I saw very little decrease in cooling with the new cooler. I am not one to say this or that product is great, unless it really is, but OCZ makes a very very good paste. Check out side by side reviews with it and the others. Maybe worth mentioning as per a the review site I reads instructions, I used a very very small amount on application in a criss cross pattern. It liquifies much quicker than most pastes, but spreads out very nicely.

As for my card I will post some pics I took a bit later to see if someone can tell me if it is a 10 chip without me removing the heat sink. I would like to unlock this simply because I think it will be easier to get help from you folks if I run it as 99.9% of you are. ... as a 470.

Thanks for the help!
