MSI GTX465 Twin Frozr II Golden Edition Owners Club - Page 501

After all is fed and run, which 470 bios is the most stable? My card number is O778 if it makes a difference. I read in the thread that pre 1000 cards do a bit better

also heres a pic I took while I had the card out the other day, unfortunately the flash glare is bad, but I was hoping someone could still tell me if it is a 10 chip card from the pic????????????

Goojah, you could look for the 465 unlock tool by Asus online. If it successfully unlocks the shaders (the tool won't do the memory) then you know you have a 275-revision core (a 470 core), and that you're good for a proper flash.

There's little chance your card doesn't have the 10 chips, but it's possible to study the back where the IC's would be to determine if the chips are physically there on the other side. There's probably pics on this thread of what to look for, if not I know you can find pics somewhere online.

Edit: I'm using the stock MSI 470 bios from techpowerup bios database. It's what I've used since day 1 (a year ago now ... wow!) and it works perfectly. Honestly all the reference/stock 470 bios are identical aside from the brand name, doesn't really matter which you use. I picked MSI just cause it's the 'right' brand.

Seriously, you should just flash the card, saving a copy of the original bios. If it causes issues, just flash back. One thing you should know though is that some of these cards will REQUIRE you to bump the voltage in Afterburner in order to stay stable as a 470. Or, you can do some bios editing to 'force' a higher 'stock' VID (and clocks, if you so desire).

The clocks/volts you see in my sig are done via bios mod so I don't have to run AB to get them. Mine came w/stock vid of .975 as a 465, but when I flashed to 470 bios, the stock VID dropped to .963 ... which wasn't stable.

RE: The voltage you end up with after flash ... it's not a matter of which brand's bios you use, because the bios doesn't determine VID (unless you edit it to force a certain value). The 'stock' VID (aka voltage) is encoded into the chip, and the bios interacts with the value set in the chip to arrive at a final value.

For some reason the 470 bios 'read' the chip's voltage code differently than the 465 bios, so I ended up with my stock VID being one 'step' down from what it was before after the flash. The combination of > shaders and < voltage made it so my card HAD to have a small voltage bump to be stable. It ran Windows just fine, but it wouldn't do games.

Hence I learned how to mod the voltage in NiBiTor (it's actually not intuitive at all so if you decide to do this, lemme know and I can help you out) and flashed to my edited bios, so I wouldn't be reliant on AB to game with.

Edit 2: Too hard to tell from that pic. Although I'm inclined to say ... it rather looks like they might not be there TBH. Is yours a 'numbered', Limited Edition model?

The way to tell is just to compare what all the memory chip spots look like from the back, and check whether all ten spots look exactly the same. Compare/look at what components are soldered on, and whether or not all the same little 'joins' between two points are filled in w/solder.

EDIT 3: Actually I found pics of what to look for, courtesy of TwoCables:

GOOD:

BAD:

I hate to say it, but based on the pic you took ... it doesn't look too good for the 10 chip situation. But if you can find the 465 unlock tool by Asus (I may have it around here somewhere), it's still for sure worth trying ... you might just have the 275 chip but only 8 memory chips. Still gives a nice boost though unlocking the extra shaders alone, good for about a 15% perf increase.

brettjv, unfortunately after further inspection I am inclined to agree with you 100%. Here is a better pics, and another to let there be no doubt it has the numbered shroud. It also has the two stickers, and the correct box. all the accessories came with it too, with the CD being the only thing that had been opened. I suspect I was duped, and somewhere there is a 465GE with a regular 465 cooler, or a replacement copper cooler (I have seen them here for $60). I will take off the shroud after I get some TIM, but I am pretty sure there is no hope of finding ten chips at this point. That being the case I am going to have a talk with the seller. It was an online auction and he had perfect feedback, so maybe he wants to keep that perfect feedback. I have seen other GE's go for this price, and I doubt they are all pulling the same trick. I would be pissed, but it's OCing pretty nicely as is. Still.....

Just tried the Asus tool, and no dice. "This card cannot unlock".

Time to get santa to pay what he owes!

1) what is OCCT, and where can I find it?

2) So long as my temp stays cool is it ok to push my voltage up to the 1.08 region?

and then just to get some feedback, this was the best Benchmark I got so far. I was able to get some stability at 820mhz with .987 voltage, but the Benchmark was slightly lower, I felt like more voltage may help, but eyes scared.

I am looking for a third card, if I cannot find one here I will most likely have to go with an EVGA FS on another forum...

Hopefully somebody is willing to donate to the tri-sli cause!

Update:
Well tried different SLI bridges, tried all 3 PCI-E slots, tried to flash it to 470, artifacts everywhere, that's IF it boots.
I repeated the same tests with my other card (#1692) and works perfect as a 465 and unlocked to 470.
Now i have to contact MSI RMA dept. again.
Will give them one more chance , hope this time they send me a working one.

1) OCCT is a OC stability checking tool. You can test CPU, as well as GPU with it. I find it helpful when checking for stability with my GPU OC's. download link

2) Yeah, that should be fine, obviously it's probably better for your card to have a lower voltage, but that is not too high for 24/7 use. I usually try to see how high I can go on the core clock with my voltage set at 1.05v, or so, just because I'm a wuss, and am more comfortable with that for 24/7 use.
What Anubis said ... I wouldn't worry in the slightest about cranking these cards up to 1.050V for daily use ... although my 24/7 is more conservative than that because I so love my GE's and don't want anything to happen to 'em cause they're irreplaceable.

Plus I don't feel like the extra FPS I get from going to 775c at 1.050V is worth the (tiny) risk and extra heat/noise that's involved with it ... we're talking like an extra 8% fps, which is very hard to see.

But if I actually needed those extra frames (as I have, very occasionally ... Just Cause 2, for instance), I'd put it to 1.050V w/o batting an eye ... I'd do it just for specific games though.

Also, I've benched at 1.1V many times w/o ill effects ... so, yeah goojah, you're good to go w/more voltage than .987. Heck, I'm pretty sure there's some of us on this thread that got cards w/1.050 VID from the factory. So you know these cards are totally within spec at that voltage.
