Got what seems to be bad news... frown.gif

(side note, this should test whether the Desire posts properly)

Was just installing a VM player app into Lucid when there was a loud BANG from WKS04 and all the power in the house went off... Three breakers had tripped; the master one, the "protected" one, a.d the loop for that part of the house (we have three loops just for downstairs) and when I reset all three the 3rd loop went off again... eek.gif Flipped the switch on the PSU and brought the loop back up, and it has been fine... I haven't had time to dug any deeper into things, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that something is very, very wrong..... frown.gif

I'll have a look at it again tonight to see what the deal is, but I don't expect to be back up before the weekend anyway...so it might be an idea to look at getting someone else to step up to the plate... I'm not sure whether that would be a permanent replacement or just another temp period....

Anyone have any ideas as to what might have been damaged - what could have gone BANG like that...?

I'll prolly get them loaded up later, but for now I'm just gonna shove it on top...

Had a chat with one of my colleagues at work, he thinks the PSU is prolly what went BANG lastnight...but any idea as to what else (if anything) might also have been damaged..? I forgot to mention earlier that the fuse in the power cable ("tail" for those over The Pond) also popped... eek.gif

Just been chatting with my other/better half, think we (I) will be getting an 850 modular to replace the one that we (me and a colleague) think has possibly lost the magic smoke...

wheee.gif Not bad for a freebie..!! wheee.gif

BTW, the temp on the front panel is the heatsink below the 8-pin connector...

Sure sounds lke the power supply, NLM. Not sure anything else could have caused a loud bang. But you should be able to smell something electrical burning from the PSU in that case. Hopefully it didn't fry anything else...but based on what you have been doing on the system, doublecheck everything once you get the new one installed.

Well, N_L_W can't get the PSU until next week...so I won't be back up and crunching until at least then...

I've got Monday off, but I can't really see me having the PSU at that point; so I don't foresee me getting WKS04 back online until prolly Weds/Thurs next week - so IDK whether JCG can carry on playing the sub until then; or if there's someone else who can take things over (internally) or whether we need to get a new sub involved....

I was wondering whether I should apply to join BBT....as it was a pretty loud bang, and the theory is that it is the PSU that went... rolleyes.giflaugher.gif xD

Sorry to hear about your PSU issue; are you sure it wasn't the result of a leak? Looking at the timing of your posts from yesterday you didn't seem to have done much leak testing. tongue.gif

"Leak testing"..?? Nobody mentioned this... rolleyes.gif

I remembered your comment (I'm sure it was you that said it, from memory) about leaving some tubing to get the water in, but that was only after having connected all the tubing to whatever the doofreys are called....and I didn't have any more of those doofreys either.....so I ended up using a few straws and gravity, with a bit of air pressure to kick things off, to fill the system..

I left it for 10-20 mins between the last of the water going in and firing it up, and there was no sign of any moisture that I could feel...

Can you really RMA a PSU for damage that was caused by your (read: my) negligence..?
If you can, then I'll get the 850 from N_L_W and keep the TX950 as a spare...or just sell it... wheee.gif

Working on getting my 975 back online with the new MB (an EVGA Classified 760), that GTX580 and new mushkin ram. I'm also going to upgrade it to the H70 I pulled from my 980X. I'll try to get it up and folding in the next couple of days and let you know. At that point, I could take over until NLM is back up.When does your next bigadv drop, JCG?

Just don't SAY it was your fault (you don't KNOW that is was). Tell them you heard a loud BANG and then no power. Use the K.I.S.S. principle here. wink.gif
