Need help regarding windows activation key...

Thread Starter
about a month ago I was having major problems with windows not even being able to boot up so I decided to reformat... The only problem was that when I looked around for my xp disk it was nowhere to be found. So I asked a friend if I could borrow his to be able to install xp on my comp. I succesfully installed and its been working fine but now it asks me to activate windows and I have dont even have a sticker with my validation code... Ive tried using my other computers activation key but it just wont work. Does windows have a set activation code for each install? Or how does this work? Is it possible that I could buy a key from ms? and where?

Only prob is that my friends disk is a dell disk so its go oem in the serial number... MS is gonna assume that I have a dell and there fore ask me what happened to all my dell documentation... The only reason I dont go out and buy a new xp is cuz: one I'd have to lose all of my current files (which I dont have access to because Im not allowed into windows). And two because windows vista is right around the corner and I dont feel like spending 150 bux on some old ass retarded OS that Ive had forever when I could be using those 150 for an upgrade...

Just as a heads-up, if you tell them you have a new mainboard, you wont be able to get a new cd key. The motherboard, according to microsoft, is what seperates or distinguishes each computer from another. By telling them you got a new motherboard is bascially saying I got a new computer. This info was posted numerous times in the past month, so use the search option and see what you can find.

If you are goint to want to regester then get ready to wip out your Credit card and give up your freind. Its the only way you will ever get microsoft to allow that borowed evaluation copy of windows XP. :

OK lets just say for the sake of argument you dont want to give up your best buddy and pay 150 bucks, Just say no to the online regestration. Drop in a little item calld the not so genuine patch in to the windows directory. its a little DLL named LegitCheckControl.dll all it does is when you install the microsoft updater it says YES im a real certified copy.

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...itcheckcontrol

Oh im not telling you to do this. And in no way am i saying this is a nice thing to do.
