*OFFICIAL* Mafia II Discussion, Screenshot, and Benchmark Thread - Page 25

Just finished it, my short review, no spoilers.

THE GOOD

  • Amazing story line. Not some cheesy average gangster "zero to hero" rubbish.
  • Small map, but good detail. More so than GTA 4, for example.
  • Good performance. Again, in comparison to GTA 4. I personally thought it looked alot better, too. They way an overcoat flapped about when you ran. So realistic. The everyday physics really helped create the atmosphere.
  • Alot of mission variety. No rubbish repetitive missions. Lets face it, that's what makes GTA go on so much. Each of these missions was different, and key to the story line. Very hard to predict what would happen.
  • Voice Acting was great, the cut scenes were great. Whilst no Avatar, the Animations were believable, and used good facial expression on the characters. The game scenes were good too. No juddary movements as they go from one script to the next.
  • Miscellaneous: Unique wanted level system. Good weapons (you can buy bullets instead of the whole weapon over and over!). Realistic driving. Upgradable, modifiable cars. 10 car garage. Great gun fight system (no awkwardness at all, which you get sometimes with 3rd person cover style shooters). Transitional time period over years and seasons (from 40s-mid 50s).

THE BAD

  • Awkward gun selection. Obviously designed for the console
  • Awkward camera angles when hand to hand fighting
  • PhysX is quite demanding, I had to have it off unfortunately.
  • I wish there were more reasons to roam. They had made a great small city which was only used for missions.
  • Some stuttering bug, perhaps memory leak, occurs after an hour or so, forcing a restart.

I will agree with the awkward camera angles when fist fighting. But sometimes I feel this is due to the fact that there are objects in the world that force the camera to do weird things.

However...

To everyone that dislikes the gun change system: this is not a console port. If anything it was ported from the PC to the console. I don't get why everything thinks it's so hokey. Simply scroll your mouse wheel, like any other shooter, and change your gun.

Have you completed the game? You can be carrying upto about 15 weapons. I didn't say the game was a console port, but it seems that that weapon UI was clearly designed for the Console first.

1-0 would have been suffice, with a couple doubled up.

Just because you see a D-Pad when you select guns?
Oh my, thats a big sell off there..

not.

If that little detail makes you mad, then you must really hate consoles.

The guns were fine

Only thing I couldnt stand was the fist fighting. It was like Assassin Creed fighting almost. Hold SPACE, he swings, you hit with a hard right, then some left. HOLD space, repeat. Wasnt fond of it.

Yeah I've completed it, and others in this thread have also commented on the gun selection, going as far as calling it a console port, that's why I said that

I just don't see it. Get to cover, select which weapon you want, go to town. Bring on the mouse wheel, I'm not sure how weapon selection could even be considered to be designed for the console?

What are you on about?

I'm referring to the time it takes me to select the weapon I want. I assure you that no strong emotions were drawn as a result of seeing, what is a resemblance of the D-pad. It was an observation I made, in which I concluded that it was designed for the console first. Obviously you can't have 1-0 on the pad, can you.

Pressing 2, four times, to select the handgun I wanted, during the heat of battle, was annoying.

THAT, was my point.

If you can't see, how that design was made, with the console pad interface in mind, then you're daft.

It's simple. 4 buttons, in the shape of the D-pad. As opposed to making use of the numbers set out on the keyboard.

Ok well I've no clue what you're talking about then. Never seen such a thing.

If you were using the mouse wheel to select weapons then you wouldn't see it. I believe the d-pad menu only shows when you use the number keys (1-4).

I used the mouse wheel most of the time myself but it could get a little cumbersome when you have a ton of weapons.

Oh good point. I thought he was just being facetious.
